"Kang also made headlines across the country in 2004 when he was a high school senior at Daegwang High School. At the time, he refused to attend the school�s chapel services on the grounds of religious freedom.
After being expelled, he filed a lawsuit against the school and the Seoul city government, seeking 50 million won in compensation. He was awarded 25 million won for damages inflicted on him by the high school."

Guy who fights for his rights vs Masses who submit meekly and do as told.
Yeah, he does sometimes come off as a pompous jack-ass, but when you're a high school senior and have the courage to take on the Seoul city government, and you win big time, your head is bound to inflate a few sizes. |

I don't think Korean inmates in prisons roll that way. But they probably will beat him senseless for being a draft dodger. |

| Conscription is a joke anyways when deingwith such a smoke-and-mirrors military like North Korea. I predict that in the next 10 years you'll see lots of youth protests and bills being presented to kill conscription, mostly once Jung Il dies, which will be all fought tooth and nail by the old, feeble Koreans whose grandparents were in the war. |

Are you saying that in ten years' time the only connection to the war will be the grandparents of those who are already old and feeble?
Sorry. I mean you ARE saying that, but is that what you mean?
Some of the vets I have met in Korea are in pretty good shape. And if you don't think they have good reason to be a little distrustful of their northern brethren, google some Yeonpyeong-do, Cheonan-ham or just a general rundown of the capabilities of nuclear weapons.
If the Korean government came up with some kind of civil service alternative to hoisting arms (which I think it should) then the allotted time should be a fair percentage longer than those who take up the gun. |

To my knowledge this already exists. My school had a computer tech intern who was basically doing his military service. I believe it was 3 years instead of 2.
It's mostly for those guys who are too out of shape or feeble to serve in the military. I'd imagine you could choose it as well.
You can join the police too. I think that's 2.5 years. |
