I'm applying for jobs right now but I need to be back in the U.S. for a weekend in September. I was wondering what my chances are of negotiating a contract where I get Thursday through Monday off on a specific weekend so I can fly back to the U.S.?

I'm a white, male, college graduate without relevant experience. Will reputable hagwons just look for someone else? Also, what are the chances if I find a job that the school will try to make me work even if my contract specifies some vacation days? Any help is appreciated.

You'll get probably 3 weeks vacation.......so if you get hired soon you can put in for those days months ahead of time, some places probably won't have a huge issue with giving you 3 of your 15 days off for a long weekend but I mean just returning to the US for one weekend? Not exactly cheap, about a months paycheck...must be a pretty important visit.

Have you already got your FBI CBC in order etc?

My CBC is getting apostilled now, should have it back sometime next week and all my other documents are ready. I know coming back will be expensive but it's either that or wait until mid September to go to Korea so I think it's worth it.

Most hagwons seem to say 10 days vacation, at least, so I'm hoping it won't be a big deal. I was curious because some people here are saying it's extremely difficult to find a job right now and others are saying it's a breeze. In either case, I wasn't sure how Korean employers would feel about hiring someone they knew would have to go back to the U.S. at some point during the contract - it might seem flaky.

Did you post your resume here or go through recruiters if you don't mind me asking? I've applied to a couple recruiters this week but haven't heard back yet.

I posted my resume here on this site and within hours was getting emails. I eventually was contacted directly by a school (a westerner) so I didn't have to go the recruiter route.

Yes, most hagwons say 10 days vacation but those 10 days are predetermined by THEM, not YOU. It all depends on your boss and how flexible they are with giving you a few unpaid days off.

If you want any flexibility with your vacation days at all, don't work for a hagwon. Public school gives almost double the number of days plus you get them consecutively (and under circumstances like yours) can use some of them while classes are in session.
