|
|
My hagwon wants me to renew for another year, but I don't want to stay for that long. I'm planning on traveling and then going home (or somewhere else ). I would like to renew for a couple of months, maybe three or so, to get some extra cash.
The management and students really like me and want me to stay.
Is it possible to renew but just for a couple of months? I told my director this last week when he asked me to renew and he hasn't got back to me about it yet. |

Yes. Just have the end date in your new contract specifying the date that you want to finish. When you go to immigration to extend your stay, they will use that date instead of one year. |

I think it's something like 60,000 to renew. It's way cheaper than finding a new teacher, if that's what you're concerned about. |

It costs the school nothing.
You have to pay 30k won for the extension to your ARC.
you need:
new contract (or 1 page addendum extending your current contract).
passport
ARC
application
30k won
sponsorship from from the school
copy of the school's business registration.
Takes about 30 minutes at your local immigration office.

Does anyone know whether we're entitled to an increased severance if we extend beyond the 12-month period (e.g., work for 1.5 years = 1.5 x avg pay in severance?) |

If you take/or the school chooses to pay out your severance from the first year, you are not entitled for any extra severance for the extension period - unless you complete another FULL year. To illustrate, if you take the severance and extend for six months, you will not receive any severance for the additional six months that you worked.
If you don't take/the school chooses not to pay out the severance after the first year, then the extension period is included in the prorated severance when it is paid out. For example, extend for six months and dont take the severance after the initial contract, your severance payout at the end of the extension will be approx. 1.5 months salary.
Also, the severance is calculated using the last three months' earnings. If you got a raise for the extension period or worked a lot of overtime during the last three months, your severance could be significantly higher than if you had a payout at the end of the first year.
The one year severance clock resets every time the severance is paid out. |

Be sure to include a pro rata severance payment in your new contract for your extension. Also include payment dates for all of your current year end amounts and for the final amounts in your extension contract. |

Make an appointment instead of waiting in line. In and out in 30 minutes.
