Hey
I found this short D&D adventure for kids (age 6+) that I used in a smaller class of Korean 10 year olds. It went over moderately well, but unfortunately it was just a single episode. I would like to try to play D&D with this class and another class of the same age and a higher level. The higher level class is 7 kids so they can't play this exact adventure.
Does anyone know where I can find simplified D&D rules for kids or does anyone have tips for helping with character creation and the like?
I think I can harass my husband into helping me create some adventures of altering some classic ones he knows, but if anyone has experience, it would help me a lot with finer points.
Also, here is where I found the adventure I played with the other class. http://www.wizards.com/dnd/files/MS_HeroesHesiod.pdf It's super simple but really cute and fun. I think they would like it more if they could create their own characters, though.
Thanks ^^ |

This reminds me of gym class. Some students liked basketball, others preferred the ropes, climbing bars, etc...
So, the gym teacher would create stations and students would rotate or choose where they wanted to go.
You might want to find out who is interested and who isn't. If there aren't enough people, then rotate. Everyone would have to put in like 1-2 hours per week for D&D stuff, but if they weren't crazy about it then they could do other stuff.
Also, I would give it a new name. Doing D&D now is like resurrecting the dead, and kids don't relate to the older stuff that well. I tried telling Chinese students about the new Karate Kid movie. They were excited and talked about it, but when I showed pictures of Pat Morita and Daniel Larusso, they had a very different response. None of them could relate. Maybe I'll have other classes use their names instead.
I also wanted to talk to them about Nicole Kidman (I had to do a class on famous people and chose Will Smith and Kidman to get started). They don't know what a witch was, but I was going to have them do something D&D oriented also with casting spells.
Maybe each student could make a character name along with their English name. To make it easier to facilitate and relate to, use a deck of cards instead of D&D cards. The cards can correspond to whatever English grammar you are teaching and points students can get.
I think the hard part is finding ways to use English they will understand and get across the special "powers" a character might gain thoughout a game. So, I would spend more time on finding how feasable this is.
If it bombs, then ditch the D&D framework and use a board game layout instead. I have never seen students dislike that. |
