| Hello. I am moving to Korea soon and I was wondering what type of Debit and Credit cards to get to bring with me. I feel uncomfortable carrying a lot of cash around. Anybody have any advice? |

Umm...ones that say "VISA" on them. ??
One that works internationally, that's for sure...since it's hard to get one here that does...though KEB is supposed to. |

Anything with MasterCard, Amex, or Visa logo will be accepted in terms of credit cards.
It's a pain in the ass to find an atm that will accept debit cards from N.America. There was only one in my entire neighborhood that let me withdraw money from a U.S. account. For one thing, Korean atms only use a four-digit pin number.
So, I brought Amex traveler's checks when I first got here. You get a better exchange rate than cash, without credit card/debit card fees. |

Not sure about AMEX credit cards. It`s a pain in the arse getting them accepted at many UK stores (because of the high costs) never mind in Korea.
Visa/Mastercard no problem. |

| Most small hole-in-the-wall shops with an old grannie will accept credit cards (visa/mastercard, amex not so much). Debit cards are hit and miss. |

| I should mention that I am from the US. I have a Visa card but the last time I traveled internationally my bank stole 3% per transaction. and I was wondering if anybody uses or used a card that was better. |

| When I was in Korea, there were citibanks everywhere. Would it be wise to create a citibank account right before moving to korea and transferring everything there? I have BMO (Canada) and it was impossible to get money... my parents had to snailmail me some cash. |

You do realize that you'll have a bank account here with an ATM card, right? At KEB you can get an international debit card with a VISA logo. A bit of a pain to get it activated for international use, but that's an option.
Other banks will give you a debit card (with VISA logo) that works within Korea.
Another option is...while most banks will not give you an international debit card, they will give you an international credit card.
Anyway, I don't use my US debit card in Korea. |

Nope, won't work. It's extremely rare to have seamless banking between countries, even with accounts under the same bank. Look for the same symbols that are on the back of your card and the word 'international'. |

| I thought about citibank but the accounts don`t transfer. HSBC said they would transfer accounts but I`m not sure if they still charge a rate to withdraw cash from an atm. When I was in Japan I could only use my card at 7-11, citibank, or the post office so I`m used to having to search, but the fees were killing me. I was just wondering if there are any better ones out there. |

Ok thanks for letting me know. A Korean friend is with Citibank and she told me to do that, but maybe she has an international account. She travels quite a bit and uses citibank to withdraw cash. |

If using a debit, let your bank know that you are going to be using it internationally or, otherwise, they may block it. |
