I recently started (March 2011) a position with EPIK SMOE. I taught last year in Gangwon-do and really enjoyed my position. I wanted to live in Seoul though so I took this public school position for this year. However, my work environment sucks. I really don't want to go into details but I just am not vibing with my school and main co-teacher. I really am giving it 110% but everything I seem to try and to adapt with seems to backfire, or be taken the wrong way. I've gone my life without ever having any arguments at work, and I very non-confrontational. I've never had any problems at work and have always received outstanding references from the places I've worked.
Already in the short time I've been here I've had more 'meetings' than I've ever had in my whole life. It seems we just got off on the wrong foot and any adjustments I make are not enough. If necessary, I will just tough it out and stay for the year. However, I came to this country as a GUEST teacher and I want to positively influence students here. I don't want my work environment to change the reasons I am here.
Anyways, that ^ is all just details. My question is, what is the process for changing jobs mid contract? If I want to leave my public school job and take another position what do I need to do? Would I need to get NEW apostilled degrees, background checks, E-2 visa stuff etc? I want to change jobs and really want to know how to make this happen? Thanks for any insight. |

Yes, Yes, Yes.
You will not be able to get a LOR unless the school has some serious law-abiding problem or are closing this early in the contract.
Your best bet is to stick it out until you have all the documents ready to go, then give your 30 days and visa run to japan when you have a new job lined up. |

I don't think EPIK gives out LOR for any reason. At least, that's what I've read on here. |

Okay. Just so I am clear. I would need the Letter of Release for...?? Why do I need to go to Japan for a visa run, and not do it inside Korea?
Currently, my E-2 visa expires at end of Feb. Is my E-2 visa sponsored by my current employer? If I apply and am accepted for a new job, and get the contract from them then I need to get a new E-2 visa?
Sorry, I know it will be a convoluted process just trying to understand completely what I need to do.
Thanks =)
Edit: Additionally WHY do I need new documents? I thought the background check etc is simply for visa purposes? |

Your main co-teacher is a back stabber. Just finish your contract and try to transfer. Some co-teachers are just dickhead. There Union is pro-North Korea anti-foreigner. They've been trying to get rid NET's for years. They want the working holiday in Canada they'll get when the governement decides to get rid of EPIK. EPIK is a crapshoot you can still get some really sweet deals through. |

1. You would need the LOR to transfer the Visa. But like I said in my first post, you are not going to get that unless the school is screwing up their financials or are closing. Neither of which seems to be happening in your case.
2. Since you can not obtain a LOR you will need ALL NEW DOCUMENTS to apply for a new visa. At which point you will need to visa run because Kimmi will not allow you to complete the process in the country.
You need all new documents because you will be applying for a NEW VISA. You can not use your current one at a different job.
Steps:
1. Apply for new documents now.
2. Wait the 6-10 weeks for your documents to finish and get to you
3. Give your school 30 days or whatever notice is in your contract and start looking for new employers
4. Start visa process with new employers
5. Visa run to Japan or where ever you want to go
6. Work at new place |
