So I've been thinking about buying an iPhone for a while, and last night I lost my old phone in a taxi so I figured I might as well buy an iPhone today.

Does anyone have experience getting an iPhone as a foreigner (E2 visa)? I'm sure there are hoops to jump through but I've seen other foreigners with them so I know it's possible. Also, I have the money to just buy it upfront, is that better than like a prorated plan?

I'm going to try to bring my (Korean) boyfriend along with me but he hasn't responded to my e-mail and since I lost my phone I'm a little worried I'm never going to see him again. Sad

there is a whole thread in the technology forum on how to do it. bottom line is if you have more than 3 months left on your e2 you can get one, just go to one of kt's global stores (I recommend kwangwhamun) and they can do it in about an hour

your mileage may very with that. Technically E2s have to have 6 months left on their visa according to the official literature, but some people have been allowed to get one with less.

I can assure you the time limit is 3 months of visa validity left. I haven't read the "official" literature, I'm going by what my affiliate store (a KT global store) has told me about visa validity.

It depends on what store you go to. I tried to get an iPhone with a little more than 3 months left on my visa and they said I needed 6 months. So now i get to wait until July. This was at the Gangnam store.

There was another thread where someone mentioned they got turned away

6 months and a Korean credit card unless your visa type is on the exempted list. E-2s are not on that list.
As I said, if they updated the list to include E-2s that's good, but someone reported being told no.

That sounds like a case of the retailer not being fully up to speed with the new rules regarding different visa types. I wasn't denying that your story was true, I was merely attempting to confirm you need at least 3 months of visa validity left.

That's from the official KT pamphlet that said the same thing last time I was in the store. If there are new rules, they're a secret to most

There have been updates to this policy since this pamphlet was issued. Student visas (D2 and D4 I believe) are no longer valid to open an account with the Smart Sponsor program, and (aparrently) E2's now only require 3 months of validity.

Also, a major problem I have with these rules is...Some of those visas on the "eligible" list must be renewed every 3 months. KT is pretty strict with this rule. So for example, one of my potential customers has a G1 visa which must be renewed every 3 months, so if she comes in 1 day after her renewal date...She must wait 3 months and come again on her exact renewal date.

I work closely with a KT global store, I know the owner and manager. They have no reason to tell me wrong information as it would affect my business as well as theirs.

Usually when non-military foreigners buy a phone from me, all we require is their bankbooks for bank information.

Go to the KT in Itaewon with your ARC and bank book. You will walk out with an iPhone about 10 minutes later. You have to sign a two year contract, though. For extra help with plans, etc., call the English service number on the card they give you.

I'm not sure how many months you need on your ARC (I have 11). But I do know that you don't need a Korean CC.

Yeah, my co-worker and I have all gone to the Itaewon KT store on separate occasions and all of us walked in and out with our iPhone in 30 minutes or less. You need your ARC card and bank book. They speak enough English to get things done.

I even ended up getting a defected phone (no sound output) so I took it back the next day and gave me a new one.

No money down, no co-signer. Korea's come a long way from 3 years ago when I had to put 200,000won to get a cheap motorola flip-phone under my friend's name.
