so idiots will say since they dont know korean cant read/write it etc. To me that just represents a bunch of @$$es. First off, if you come to korea to teach, LEARN the language. really no one is forcing you to be an ESL teacher in korea. You applied here, you wanted to come, you want the money, LEARN to obey the laws of a foreign country as well. And im sure someone will say "well the military here is forced to come" I come from a military family, yeah you might get stationed here, it happens. What ISNT part of your job is to walk around like a complete douche because you dont like it here or it wasnt your first choice on the list of assignments you chose (yeah you normally can pick 3 places, ALMOST no one gets their choices anyways!) but then again NO one forced you to join the military, there WAS NO draft when you signed up.
bottom line, GET OVER IT. learn to respect other countries and people. |

By the way, the action of walking across a road illegally is correctly termed jaywalking. |

Jaywalking is a terrible, heinous travesty of a criminal act. I take photos of every person I catch in the act and submit them to the local police box so that the authorities can make sure these criminals get their act together. I've also petitioned for the city of Seoul to install cameras at all crosswalks across the city which will record a photo of the person so they may be fined and arrested if repeat offenders.

No, I focus on the fact that he refers to the "law abiding" non-jaywalkers, which makes me think that OP is likely blowing this way out of proportion. |

Okay. So what should we do? Shake hands and agree to chide drunken buttmonkeys we see jaywalking in the street for being jaywalking buttmonkeys? Write a petition for cops to enforce jaywalking laws strictly with Westerners? Form a civil group to help combat jaywalking asshattery?
I'm just taking the piss on a goofy thread. |

| My first couple of months here, I was running an errand with my coteacher. It was colder than we had anticipated, and I really had to wee, so I was trying to get home ASAP. We were at an intersection, there were absolutely no cars, so I ran quickly across the street. She chided me, saying that Korean people never do that. Well, speak of the devil, an ajosshi did it at that exact moment. I told her "He must be Chinese," with a big smile. |

Jaywalking seems to be something terrible in Korea until one becomes a certain age.......I've never seen anyone reprimand old people for jaywalking. |

This wasn't in Itaewon, it was in a pretty big suburb outside of Seoul.

It's because Koreans aren't usually confrontational... and, the fact that they're foreigners means that (in their minds), most Koreans won't want to use English to confront them.
But yeah, this attitude allows that whole mentality to persist... foreigners being able to do as they wish, when they want, without repercussions... and can use the excuse of being "foreign" or oblivious, to their advantage. As Koreans will usually just sit back and ignore, or not say anything, or, even laugh because they're "silly foreigners" etc.
Happens all the time, I don't see it changing either. (And THAT's why perceptions never change... because it DOES happen, and it doesn't change.) |

My parents (non-Korean atheists) were like this. Whenever I said something my mom would always say "Because that's the LAW."
Also one NET here who was an evangelical Christian refused to jaywalk as well.
I think its indicative of a mindset that says "Responsibility before fun and convenience". Can't say that's a bad attitude to have. |

Perhaps a good lesson to teach children. Always wait for the walk light......but for god's sake, if you're an adult and there isn't a car in sight, just walk! Use your own eyes and brain. The crosswalk lights are not meant to be so slavishly obeyed by adults. |

Yah the green man doesn't mean poop. The cars don't obey it and you shouldn't either. If I just went ahead and crossed as soon as the light turned green I'd be dead by now. Use your eyes. If there are cars then don't cross. If it's clear then why not?
Just make sure you're not gonna get hit. And make sure that no one around you is gonna blindly follow your lead and get creamed themselves...
I think proper jaywalking technique should be the new focus of this thread.
Radius, you always struck me as pretty level-minded, but getting worked up about something this slight? It's really not worth it... |

| A lot of Koreans do not view us foreigners in the most favorable light to begin with. My impression is that Radius has been doing his part to try to improve things, only to have monkey foreigner lay a big brown one with him in attendance. Yeah, I can feel 'im. |
