Hi,

I've never been a scanner before, so doing so in a foreign language is not easy.

My office has an HP Scanjet 4850. I want to scan documents, eg: my degree, and save them on my USB so I can email them.

I tried scanning my degree, but there's a couple of problems:

1. It doesn't capture the whole thing. And for some reason, after every time I hit "scan", it asked if I wanted to scan again, and scanned a slightly different perspective. The best one contains all the vital info on the degree (including a slight ketchup stain for authenticity), but cuts off the "sity" in "University", as well as the first part of the university's name. So, it looks a little stupid.

2. I don't know how to save the darn thing to USB when I'm done. I had another teacher look it over, but she can't figure it out, either. I suspect the machine's only good for scan and print. So, I printed it out, as mentioned in 1, it looks kind of dumb.

I know I should get the secretary at the school to do this for me, but I don't really want the word to get round that I'm applying for jobs! I like my job here, I really do, but I'm looking around...

Thanks for those who can help me... scanner 101!

(PS... does anybody know about businesses that do scanning services?)

I'd imagine there's a Korean equivalent of that site for your Korean friends helping you.

First off from what program are you scanning from. I think you want pictures of your degrees and that. So you need to scan from a picture viewing/editing program.

You should scan from a picture viewing program like irfanview or Faststone Image Viewer. Check out filehippo.com for some good free ones to use.

Many of them will have an option like acquire from device or scan or something like that. You might have to experiment a little. General from the picture viewing program you will go to another program (HP related) that will set up a preliminary scan and details like DPI and contrast and area to scan. Once that is done you do the final scan and the output is sent to the picture viewing/editing program. In the picture viewing program you then can do some basic edits like crop, file type to save as, and so one. You will need to be a little careful here as you want to make sure you scan does not end up as 2.0+ MB file size which some email places will not send as they are too big. With some tinkering you can shrink to a manageable size.

If you really need some help PM me and I will give you a phone number to call and I will help step you through.

Just ask for help. You would be amazed at how easy it is for Koreans to filter out anything that has English on it. No one will ever know you are applying for jobs.

I have had Korean English teachers come in to school with T-shirts in English, and after making a comment and finding them dumbfounded, inquired and found that they never read the shirt. Not once.

You'd be surprised.
