people everywhere do all sorts of obnoxious things in seoul, yes. but the OP's point is that westerners shouldn't because we stand out. well, being a westerner is not a guilt in my book nor is being obnoxious in public. jaywalking is but the subject got away with it so the only thing he should be faulted on is being lucky.

that lucky bstrd...

The fact you guys keep harping on the "J-walking" part of my rant just goes to show you how befuddled you actually are about my complaint against these guys. I don't know how many times I have to repeat myself, I'm starting to sound like I do in class. Repeat, repeat, repeat. It was the manner in which he acted (mostly the flower thing), not the fact he j-walked.

The reason we keep harping on the jaywalking part of your rant is that you doubled down on it by referring to the law-abiding citizens who stayed on the other side of the street. Had you referred to the non-mentally impaired individuals who stayed on the other side of a busy street to avoid getting hit by a car, you'd likely have a more sympathetic crowd.

Well get over it. And besides, tell me how I was in the wrong by saying law abiding. Were they not?

Exactly. It's like I'm talking to a brick wall. Why is it that you get it, but others can't?

I get it.
So the guy was j-walking so what?

Geez... chill out.

Wink

Do you people really think I care that the foreigners were J-walking--I do it myself! But I don't stand in the middle of the road with the car lights shining at me from both sides like I'm on a stage and yell back to the rest of my friends like a drunk idiot. As I said before, the thing that tipped it over the edge for me was when he went swinging from the display ripping flowers off of it like a drunken maniac...again, I did that kind of stuff, too--WHEN I WAS 10!

So one guy jaywalked, what's the big deal?

The moral of the story is:

When in Korea, try to fit in as much as possible. Rather than picking a flower in a drunken show of idiocy (which was the main point--not the jaywalking), you should vomit your soju-ramyeon on the flowers.

Seriously, the majority of foreigners don't act like this. The same goes for Koreans, so YOU get over it. Don't have a complex because a few idiots act like idiots. More of us than not act like civilized people. You don't want to look bad? Tsk tsk the idiot in agreement. Still, the remark about foreigners thinking that it's their country was a wee bit racist, painting us all in one stroke.

Wait... so you support underage drinking? I think that's worse than jaywalking.

no one comes across in a good light in your story. the guy sounds like a jerk, as do the koreans making blanket statements about foreigners and displaying "this is our land" nativism. i think you're right that people should behave more civilly, of course, but isn't a big part of the reason you even care about what the guy did - and about what other expats will do - the tendency some people have to unfairly group us all together under the label of "foreigner" and, as another poster said, paint us all in one stroke?

I'm in favor of it myself. In moderation, of course.

the j-walking fear in korea and japan is weird. it'll be 4am, no one around, and people will still wait for the green light man to shine before they take a step. unless you're in hongdae of course.

Jaywalking seems to be something terrible in Korea until one becomes a certain age.......I've never seen anyone reprimand old people for jaywalking.

Old people can get away with anything. I once saw an old man walking around with his c*ck hanging out!
