Aaargh the canadian embassy website is just plain stupid. Hoping someone here can help out asap.

I booked monday off (cancelled classes) to head over to Seoul to renew my passport, set to travel tomorrow & come back later monday, but easter weekend had slipped my radar. A friend brought it up tonight. No problem, I thought, I'll just check the site.

Well its no easy chore to find the list of holidays they observe & when I finally find it it lists april 9 as a holiday but calls it easter monday! No mention of being closed april 12. Wtf?

Anyone shed some light here? Anyone know?

Which kind of suggests they might be open monday. But I'm reluctant to undertake a 4 hour busride to learn otherwise.

I just tried their listed phone number on the offchance they answer afterhours & got a befuddled Korean on his cellphone who despite speaking pretty good english had nothing to do with the embassy. That site has problems.

Edit: ok thanks RR, I see your update. It looks pretty good that they'll be open.

Can a passport be renewed?
No, you must re-apply by providing a completed application form signed by an eligible guarantor. You must also provide two identical photos and an original document of proof of Canadian citizenship, as you did when you applied for your first passport.

Why are Canadian passports not renewable?
Canadian passports are valid for five years only and a new passport must be obtained upon expiry. This is in accordance with the Canadian Passport Order (SI/81-86) which governs passport issuance.

Please note that passport offices will be closed for the following Government holidays:
April 9 and 12, Easter
May 24, Victoria Day
June 24, St. Jean-Baptiste Day (Quebec)
July1, Canada Day
August 2, Civic Holiday (excluding Quebec)
September 6, Labour Day
October 11, Thanksgiving Day

Yikes. The contrary information cascades. What do you think -- call off my trip as likely a no-go? (I didnt mean renew in that sense, but to get a new one.)

& why o why cant those guys provide some straight information about holidays. Theyre only open like 2 or 4 hours a day, you'd think someone there could take 5 minutes to type in a clear list of days theyre not open ..

I would guess that the Easter Monday part is incorrect. This is because in all languages it says April 9 is the holiday, and in two languages it says that this day is Good Friday.

However, it would probably be easier to reschedule with your boss than take the chance.

Thats what I decided to do -- think I'll head over on election day & take care of it friday. My classes tomorrow are already irredeemably cancelled & I gotta do the same for friday now too. I've got a good boss who will laugh it off but I'll be in for some ribbing about screwing up.

But my point stands: I think its ridiculous that an embassy website should leave the public speculating about whether they'll be open or not.

Well in Canada we set aside a day a year to lay a pounding on anyone you find annoying. Thats why we're so placid the rest of the time.

I saw this thread a little late (It's already Monday morning in Korea) but can confirm that all federal govt of Canada offices are closed on both Good Friday and Easter Monday, including all the embassies and consulates worldwide.

Is the election day a declared holiday in Korea? The embassy is closed on both Korean and Canadian holidays.
