Interesting article:
http://joongangdaily.joins.com/article/view.asp?aid=2935340
But something is funny about the last line; we are thinking of asking some of the more popular foreign teachers to work as regular teachers, paying them about 130,000 won ($119) per class, the minimum wage for professional teachers.
I think Korean teachers might be surprised to hear that's the minimum. |

Before I took this lecture, I thought Pakistan was just a poor country, student Kim Eun-wu, 11, said. But all of my prejudices about Pakistan have been dispelled by meeting Hassan.
Nice to know that Korea has racist 11 year olds. |

Pakistan is a poor country, but Kin Eun-wu has added depth to her understanding of Pakistan. Your comment just illustrates one way in which Korea doesn't need multiculturalism. The Western penchant for squealing 'racist' at every opportunity is obnoxious and unproductive. |

oh and your observation was indeed stereotyping and racistic.
'westerners misuse the word 'racist''- stereotyping
which could be generalized as
'caucasians can't even properly use their own language' -racism
anyways, it's your right to condescend. |

There is a common long-standing attitude here in Korea about south Asians being poor, undeveloped, and 'dirty'. And all too often there is the same frog-in-a-well attitude I found back home and in other countries. It's kind of natural. Not constructive, but natural.
I'm impressed the government is taking pains to find and send out representatives to schools to open up young minds to other countries and cultures. |

Yep, racism is alive and well in Korea. The amount of times that children have seen a picture of a black person and said "dirty" or "monkey" in my classes through the years would be quite high. They look at anyone with dark skin and mock them. It's disgusting. |

You need to learn to use emoticons correctly. The rule is, if your statement is sarcastic, your emoticon should signal your genuine tone. Absent the emoticon, there is no tone to go by, only context. And as you'll see above, the context was weak, and your emoticon signaled condescension.

Stereotyping, maybe. It was certainly a broad generalization. But broad generalizations are necessary when talking about an entire civilization (the West). Hissy Westerners get in a tizzy about it, but then of course Dave's Posters (I mean you guys in off-topic) will turn around and make broad generalizations about Koreans.

Oh I found that out years ago when I jokingly pretended to call the police on some of my worst students.
"Go ahead teacher. You not Korean."
From the mouths of babes.
Even 10 year olds automatically know that korean police will not help foreigners.

In other words...Korean police will always take the side of Koreans against foreigners.. no matter how in-the-wrong they are.
From the mouths of babes. If 10 year olds know the that, then it must be true. |
Was that really racism, at least on the Korean kid's part? Or just him pointing out to you the truth? |
