What was it like living with Korean roommates?

The reason I'm considering this is because I want to live in Seoul, and I want to live with my girlfriend. She currently lives with her parents so its hard to meet each other. I'm finishing my university through distance education so I wouldn't be able to save up for jeonsae for a whole apartment. And she's on the first year of her job so her salary is low, making it hard to save jeonsae.

Renting a room is the perfect solution?

a lot of apartments in HBC/itaewon only require a little key money (maybe 1 or 2 million) so if you can swing that you would be golden. Check craigslist for people looking for a roomate as well. While i've never lived with a korean, i can imagine that they would be decent roomates as long as you don't mind the smell of kimchi and a moderate amount of quiet time.

What's this "jeonsae" and why can't it be explained in English?

I don't know who would want to rent a room to a young interracial couple.

People sometimes call it "key money" here but nobody would no what the hell you're talking about back home. In my opinion saying "key money" is just adding an unnecessary term that people don't know anyway, so calling it jeonsae is fine.

You would know about this if you had half a working brain. You are so lazy and pathetic that you'd rather make yourself look like an ass and a fool than type in jeonsae and look at the first search result on Google.

What's wrong with an interracial couple specifically? Do you really know that many people here anyway? If all the people you know wouldn't rent to an interracial couple, I'm going to assume you hang out with a select group who are as lazy and stupid as you are.

Uh Jeonsae is not the same as key money. Key money is the deposit.

Jeonsae is when you rent a place with a high deposit, so you don't have to pay monthly rent.

Worlsae is when you put down a smaller deposit and also pay monthly rent.

@OP

your post is quite ambiguous tbh. what roommates or 'room' are you referring to? are you talking about an apartment or a 'hasook jib'?

I have some experience in the matter so ask away

I bet he doesn't apologize to me for asking about it.

And from what I've read on the boards, many, many Koreans seem to be against interracial relationships, to the point where people get yelled at in the streets for diluting the gene pool. This doesn't seem like the kind of environment which would rent out rooms in their homes to interracial couples. (This is what I assumed he meant, he wants to rent a room in someone's home, but it is ambiguous.)

Outside of late nights in Itaewon or hongdae, I've never heard of this happening in Seoul. Does it still happen there? In regional cities and the countryside maybe.

Having roommates, while very common in the US, and probably wherever you are from, is not the done thing in Korea. I am sure there are people who do it, but its not like home where a bunch of buddies go out and rent a place together. People here live with their families, or by themselves in a one-room, or with their wife/husband when they get married. Nobody is going to want to live with any couple. Race isn't the issue here.

You could find some foreigners on craigslist to live with in HBC or Itaewon but I personally would rather shoot myself in the face than live with some random knucklehead foreigners.

Follow the others' advice and get your own place.

I live in the oldest kinda farming town as it gets (see my user name--I live in the least populated province of Korea) and my girlfriend and I have had zero problems when she comes on weekends.

Don't care what you've read on these boards. I'm not asking for advice from someone whose experience with Korea is limited to reading these boards.

Yeah, agreed I lived on an Island last year regularily ate out and went out with k females, no-one ever looked at us twice.

A korean co-teacher (male) actually asked me to flat with him, he's got a huge two bedroom place, so it certainly happens but you might have to look around
