Does anyone know where I can find information on what is and is not covered by Korean National Health Insurance? You know the health insurance that most Korean ESL employers are paying for their teachers at 50% payment?
I want to figure out what is and is not covered by the national health insurance (fees , doctors visits, ambulances etc etc). Does anyone know the rate at which you covered under in korean national health insurance. For istance is it something like 70% by the goverment and 30% me?
Anybody can supply me with the info or where i might find the info, I would greatly appreciate it!!
THanks! |

Poke around here, it will answer most of your questions.

Generally speaking, if you go to a GP it costs 3,000~4,000 won for consultation and prescription writing.
I spent 10,000,000 won for my wife to give birth to my child. She spent a month in the hospital before he was born 7 weeks premature. He was in NCIU for 2 weeks.
Some dental is covered. I had all my old metal fillings replaced for I think 7,000 per filling.
I think I spent 60,000 won for a 35 km ambulance ride. |

Thanks Alot! I'm looking over the site as we speak. Just to clarify though - just becuase its such a leap from what i'm used to. A doctors visit is really only the equivalent of 2-3USD$? If you wouldn't mind just confirming - hahah again becuase its such a leap from i'm used too, my brain thinks its a mistake .
Appreciate the website link. |

Yes, it's true. It is a very good system and is one of the best things about Korea. It makes financial sense because the earlier you see a doctor the earlier you can be treated and the lower the cost will be for treatment. Don't forget, too, that you paid into the system and many expats pay without ever using it. If you ever have an emergency, like getting hit by a car or needing emergency surgery, you'll appreciate the system even more, because you will get the treatment you need and then you won't get buried by the bill. |
