Hello,
I just received a contract from ChungDahm Learning (aka. CDI) at the April English Dongdaemun branch in Seoul.
I was just wondering if anyone had any info about them? About the location I am placed at? Anything will be helpful, thanks! |

I assume this is an hourly pay contract (I think that's all they do at the April branch). What rate are they offering you?
CDI has a very mixed reception amongst teachers, I've noticed. On the one hand, they generally pay better than most other hagwons; on the other hand, they offer almost no vacation time (7 days!) and surveillance cameras are in EVERY CLASS ROOM. These cameras are used to film teachers and are looked at for performance reviews. No preparation is involved, which is good for new teachers but frustrating for the more experienced crowd. |

This is actually on a monthly salary wage (2.3 mill/month) with 15 paid vacation days. I am aware of the CCTVs in every classroom and as much as I don't like it, I guess I will have to live with it. |

That's a very standard contract--you could get that just about anywhere without the CCTVs. However, CDI is more reliable than smaller hagwons and will inevitably involve less prep. |

| I am actually glad there are CCTV cameras in a classroom. When you think about it, it is a bit of insurance for the teacher. I teach lots of different age levels. With the younger kids thee is alot of playing going on. A camera covers my ass if I ever accused of inappropriate behaviour. It also shows just what the Ss are upto in a class. Little Min-Su is being an asshole, its on tape. |

I just got an offer from another branch, and aside from the lack of vacation and CCTV, what I don't like is the original diploma clause (2.7 in my contract). It states:

The instructor will submit his/her original diploma to the Company before the first day of this contract as an assurance of such degree being in his/her possession and available to submit to the Ministry of Education on the first day of teaching and will receive back the original diploma at the end of the contract. If the instructor fails to submit the original diploma to be noted at the Ministry of Education on his/her first day of this contract, the contract will be deemed null and void. |
I don't want anyone holding on to that except for me. |

I have heard that they do have to submit the diploma to the Ministry of Education. I have submitted my diploma but they should NOT hold it until the end of the contract. That kind of "ransom" does not sound right. I don't want to sound too negative, but by holding your diploma, they take away any availability for you to jump ship. It takes about 10 days at the most to do this process at the government office. You certainly have a right to possess your diploma and they certainly do NOT have a right to hold it hostage.
Worst case scenario, a friend of mine submitted his diploma to the hagwon he was working at. Hagwon went south (out of business) and the diploma was long gone. |
