| Yeah, the problem seems to be my old nemesis Will Power. I guess any diet works if you can resist eating all that stuff you feel deprived of. Why is it so hard to resist? It's weird. |

Hey!
I finally weighed myself today and I've lost 6 lbs in the last 3 weeks. It's not super fast weight loss, but I am super stoked.
I wish spot reduction was real, though. My already skinny legs (I was like a fat apple perched upon two toothpicks) are looking even scrawnier. My knees are knocking together and bruising. My upper arm fat remains persistent as ever. I really think only medical intervention can save that area. I know fat cells can only be reduced and not eliminated completely. Is it possible that I am retaining water in these fat cells encouraging them to stay expanded? Seriously, WTF!
I haven't had any major cravings since I came across this article so I haven't tested it out. Those dealing with cravings might try out this "visualization" method. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10344/1109658-114.stm |

^^ Great work Dorothy. While I have never experienced fat on my arms, I have seen girls at the gym using very light weights in a punching routine. They say that it helps.
I've lost too. It's been a month or so since I started doing cardio running on the treadmill...my shin splints are gone now because I switched from outdoor running to treadmill, and I'm down 9 pounds. Very happy...isn't it amazing how fast we gain weight and how long it takes to lose it? I really hate that. |

I gave up smoking last year, cold turkey. I still want to smoke every time I get stressed, but I remember how hard it was to beat the habit, so I don't. Quit smoking, you start to LOVE food. I never used to eat so much when I was younger.
Then I gained 15 pounds, maybe more...so I started dieting and working out.
I cut the sugar out completely. Well, I still drink the occasional coke. But no white sugar, ever. THAT was as hard as quitting smoking...
Next up: Coffee. |

| Much to the dismay of the Koreans, I've pretty much stopped eating rice period, at school or out in restaurants that serve it with soup. They always point to the rice bowl and try to push me to eat it but now I firmly reply no thanks! I also flat out refuse to drink any more sugary "health" drinks. I pocket and either give away or throw away candy that's given to me. I've probably lost 7-8 pounds since I've been here and it's only been a couple of months. I also took acai pills and drank diluted apple cider vinegar before meals. |

Stood on a scale at the jimjjilbang the other day and I am down six kg since February. Less beer - though I do fall of the wagon on occasion - means more energy and better sleep.
I reckon I have about fifteen kg to go before I look like my old college self again.
How goes the battle folks? |

It's going well. When I keep calories around or less than 1000 a day (not including pure fruits/veg) I lose weight. I've never felt in control of weight loss like this before! I don't do this all the time, though, so weight loss isn't speedy, but I haven't been gaining on days off, either... just staying the same.
I find it hard to diet every day, day in and day out, but I can stick to it for a week on, then a week off...
I've switched to diet pop. Next frontier: no more saturday ice cream! (Ok, I'm planning to get it next saturday, but that's an exception) (ya right) |

Had my first IN n OUT burger today in almost three weeks. It was delicious. Had 13-14 fries too. Shared the fries with mistress. No soda for me though, drank water. Still at 184 pounds, haven't really moved off that in a week. Workouts are still 1 hour. Switched to: Treadmill, 2miles in 26 min, then over to elliptical machine for another 30 min.
Did you know that the elliptical machine shows that you burn three times the calories as the treadmill? I don't know why that is...
I can still grab a small handful of fat around my waist. I've lost weight, and I'm toned a lot more, but It's going to take another 10-12 pounds to get me to flat. I am still not anywhere close to being able to run an 8 or 9 minute mile, which has been my goal. Probably because I'm older now... |

I went to the movies and saw Thor today. So basically I has a caramel machiatto for lunch and a bunch of popcon for dinner. What's for dessert? red wine of course.
No one should ever, ever take dieting advice from me. |

The starvation mode thing is mostly a myth. If you ease back up in calories, your body will burn them normally.
Most people who gain a lot of weight after dieting do so because a. they are going back to old habits which is well over a normal caloric intake, b. they binge and c. they are getting older so their metabolism is slowing up anyway and/or d. they destroyed their muscle so have a slower metabolism as a result of that. You may gain a few more pounds inititially, but a bit of that will be the water weight you lost and maybe the weight of food in your stomach. The hard thing is most people don't go to a reasonable diet after crash dieting because they want to eat all the foods they loved before.
I am in a rush and this is the first source that popped up. http://www.weightlossresources.co.uk/calories/burning_calories/starvation.htm
You won't permanently kill your metabolism. If you are building muscle, you won't have any trouble at all! |
It's not all myth. I spent a few of my teenage years severely restricting my caloric intake (600 calories a day or fewer) and consequently wrecked my metabolism for good. Putting your body into starvation mode for extended periods of time can permanently damage your thyroid and/or alter the messages your brain (your hypothalamus specifically) sends to it.
Granted, the occasional crash diet will have little deleterious impact, if any; yet it's naive to think that long term, extreme diets have none. |

Well the OP did say she was planning on doing it for only a short time. I'm sure if she got to the point where her body was obviously cutting out "unnecessary" functions (as evidenced by hair loss, period loss, etc) she would definitely stop before causing irreversible damage. Obviously, suffering from an eating disorder for a number of years can cause severe long-term negative effects. But as with anything, it depends on the person. I do think it is worse for younger folks (HS aged or even younger) because their bodies are still developing. |

hello everyone, so good to see people in this forum actually being encouraging for a change, hehe.
anyway, i have about 7 kilos i would like to lose before mid july (vacation and going to a wedding). I've lost maybe one kilo so far since i've started making a conscious effort, but it's really coming along quite slowly and i'm not very happy with my progress. i walk at least 30-40 minutes a day just to school and back (well that's after i get on and off the bus) and i've been cycling at home for about 30 minutes at least 3 times a week (that's the only equipment i have at home). for lunch, i've stopped eating school lunch (which was incredibly carb crazy and fattening) and bring a salad with chicken, and usually a yogurt for mid morning snack and fruit for mid afternoon snack. pretty much drinking only water and coffee too. iv'e been doing this at least two weeks now. i've pretty much stopped drinking altogether too (maybe 2 drinks every other week).
what is the deal??? i'm not budging and it's been quite frustrating especially since i think that i have much healthier eating habits than i did in the states. any ideas of what i'm doing wrong? is it b/c i'm in my late 20's? i need to be bathing suit ready in 2 months, and i don't want to just look fine. i want to look fabulous! |

DaisyDew:
I require more information. Are you counting your daily calorie intake? 1 kilo in 2 weeks is actually just fine. 1 lb/week is normal unless you are actually overweight.
You should be sure to count your calories. Aim for about 500 calories below your bmr or no less than 1200 cal/day. Exercise is great and super important for health, but it can't create miracles. You can't just eat healthier, you gotta do the math.
Overall, you are on the right track. You'll probably lose 13 or 14 lbs by mid July, but it's the healthier way.
There is another thread about a gentleman looking to lose weight (and save money) that has A LOT of information. You can PM me for bad advice as well. |

i think that's the problem, i have no idea what kind of calories i'm taking in because i'm usually eating korean food and have a hard time finding how many calories are in what i'm eating.
usually for breakfast i have one slice of bread (cut it in half) and put an egg and cheese on it, then some fruit. and also some coffee. i already mentioned my usual weekday lunch. then evenings i have korean food usually, with some rice. not a HUGE portion or anything but i just can't give it up. i'm sorry i love rice!
maybe i'm just being impatient, i dont know. but if anyone has seen a website that shows the calories of korean food, let me know! |

You guys have inspired me to get back on my diet...i got lazy after I came to korea and had the urge to go out and try all the food. I'm trying to lose 60 lbs before my contract is up (about 10 and a half months) so 6 pounds a month seems do-able. I'll post up my nutrition guide and exercise routine tomorrow when i have some more free time if anyone is looking for a bit of direction.
On a side note...does anyone know if there is light yogurt in korea? Like no sugar...i spent 20 minutes at homeplus and ended up just picking one with a skinny girl on it as an educated guess lol. |
