One thing I did not like, however, is that I must pay airfare & get reimbursed later. Is that normal?

One more thing. I was never phone interviewed, but hired anyway. What should I make of that?

My contract was very vague...when I asked for it to be amended (i.e. add pension & what day is payday to it, among other things), they said they could not change the contract. And not to worry about pension in the contract, because it's mandatory that I receive pension.

So, should I just move on to another job? I had my heart set on this one because I knew someone that worked here, & everyone had great things to say about the school and the area.

I would definitely recommend that you only sign a contract that has things like pension, health insurance, pay dates, tax rate, etc. spelled out in detail. I say this after personally having 2 bad experiences with hagwon contracts in the past 8 months, both related to things that were only vaguely phrased.

I think this is becoming the norm.

Are you American or Canadian? Do you have a lack of physical deformities? Bonus: are you somewhat attractive? If you answered yes to these questions, then that's really all the average hagwon director needs to know in order to hire you.

Really? Good lord. But, have to say "I thought so".

Well, I haven't signed anything, so that's good.

Yeah pension is mandatory by law for employees on an E-2 visa. If it's not in the contract, they won't pay it, and they're breaking the law. Nothing stopping them from screwing you over in a multitude of other ways as well.

Ya the airfare thing is common. It helps protect the schools from runners. It is understandable. The question is how are they taking it out. All at once or over time. All at once can be very hard for a new hire because many times they need their first pay check! Talk to your school and ask if they can stagger the pay seizures over 2 or 3 months. Also I would ask for half reimbursement at 6 months.

Plus check with previous teachers about how their plane tickets went - did anybody get screwed or that.

As to the no phone Interview - some schools are so rushed they will take anybody if they are breathing. Still why did you go for the Job if they did no Interview - I mean Interview can be very helpful for both parties both ways.

Well if you are all ready with the school and In Korea you are pretty much screwed or settled.

I've had my airfare paid after I arrived by both public school and hagwon working in Korea. i wouldn't worry too much. Just make sure you speak with teachers at the school. If they are all good, you should be sweet.

The really annoying thing is at the end of the contract when they want to reimburse you for your flight. So, while they are collecting interest on that 900,000 Won deposit, they want another loan to cover your airfare.
