|
|
| So I'm having my mom ship me a pretty massive care package with shirts, supplements, shaving accessories, etc. Possibly headphones as well if it doesn't add too much to the cost. I remember my recruiter telling me that FedEx was the most reliable shipping method and I ended paying $50 to send a few documents, which was ridiculous. My grandparents sent me a sweatshirt via USPS and it cost around $30, made it here in only a week. Since this shipment is going to have a value of $150-250 I want to make sure it gets here. What's the most cost effective method of shipping? How much should I be expecting to pay? Has anyone had any packages get lost? |

Keep it under $150 INCLUDING shipping costs or it
will get stuck in customs.
USPS and sent to you at your school is the best bet.
Sent a copy of your schools address (written or printed in large font in Korean) and have her stick that on the box as well as addressing it in English.
Should arrive in 2 weeks or so.

What's wrong with having it shipped to my apartment? I've had stuff shipped here before. |

and if your care package disappears from the spot by the mail box while you are at work you are happy with it?
At least at your school there is someone there to accept it and make sure you actually get it rather than just have it dumped in front of your door.
Do as you please.

| So my Mom just informed that a 18x18x6 box (the size I need to ship all my stuff) is going to be $82 flat rate via USPS...I'm assuming this is going to be the cheapest possible shipping method, unless there is another way I'm unaware of? |

| Anyone? I guess my only options are to pay the $82 or not have her send it at all? |

You used to be able to ship surface FROM the States. No more. |

I think you're missing the point. It's in the past, you can NOT do it any longer. There is no cheap option. Have your sender go to the post office and mail it to you. They will give them a list of prices (overnight, 2nd day, regular mail, etc.). Mailing is expensive now.
Fed Ex and other services are much more expensive, but FAST (which is why you sent documents for your visa with them). |

Parcel post. It went "surface" (i.e. by ship) and took several weeks. It was relatively cheap, if it wasn't something you needed right away. I wish they still had it, as I'm going to want to ship a couple of boxes of things to myself.. |

Does parcel post not exist at all anymore or just not for international shipping? Anyone know their reason for discontinuing it? |

Just like the US to discontinue something like that (if they did). USPS Airmail is expensive and extremely unreliable for packages to other countries. For international packages its because of the fact it has to use another countries mail service on the other end. I had a fairly important package sent to Thailand by USPS. It arrived 3 months later. Because of the USPS? I doubt it. The Thai postal service messed it up. Important items always send by courier, DHL for international documents, UPS for large packages. Fedex is preferable for documents sent domestically.
Thailand has a courier that makes sure the package arrives at the US end. Technically no faster, but they make sure it arrives. A little less expensive than DHL.
If you send your package by courier, you probably want to use UPS because of the package size. |

They still have domestic surface, just not international. I'm reasonably certain the issue was financial (not enough people using it or just not cost effective). |
