I have been offered a job to teach at a University. I am to teach 9 hours a week and will be getting 3 million a month. That's about all I know at the moment. How much holiday am I entitled too? should I ask for housing on top of this?

any other info would be appreciated.

No offence Malislamusrex but you come across as a bit clueless. If you have been applying for universities surely you would have realised by now that they differ greatly in the conditions they offer, so no one will be able to tell you what to expect unless they know the name of the university that offered you the job. Also surely you would have looked into what conditions the university you applied to offered, before you applied to it. I thought these kind of jobs were supposed to be highly sought after and competitive! Laughing

Ask to see the contract, that should answer all of your questions about housing and vacation. Some unis offer housing, and some don't.

If you don't want that job because they don't offer housing or there isn't enough vacation time, don't worry, I'm sure they'll find someone else who will.

That's what I did I asked to see the contract and particulars about the position. What I want to know is, is the contract the be all and end all or is there room for negotiation?

The advert has no details.

http://www.eslcafe.com/jobs/korea/index.cgi?read=47131

another advert from the same University has more details.

http://www.eslcafe.com/jobs/korea/index.cgi?read=47456

But this is 12 hours not 9, so I wonder if a contract is a standard thing or does each department write their own.

Each department writes their own. Most likely, the quoted salary includes a housing allowance.

You will also get the full 5 months vacation with this position.

A very nice job offer.

It's 9 hours a week, that's it. 5 months vacation. No housing. It's pretty clear. How do I know? I work in the department.

HUFS in Seoul is advertising for Business profs, too. The pay seems to be in the same ballpark for someone without any experirence; too low to attract Ph.D.s. Still, the pay jumps to 3.63 million/month with 2 years of experience, 4.15 with 6 years of experience.

They're looking for MBAs and Ph.D.s, but the slots appear to be geared more toward MBAs. Housing and round trip air on top of the salary, and a raise from the second year.

The upside is that if you publish in SSCI journals, you get 8 million won a pop (1-2 million for non SSCI publications).

The opportunities are fleeting so it's tough to give you any advice. By the time you actually did knock out an MBA, they might decide not to have business English teachers!

At any rate, the people I know teaching 'Business English' mostly have MBAs with additional TESOL certifications. There isn't much 'business' in the 'Business English', though; a lot of it is the same repetitive entry level stuff you'd be teaching, anyway.

It's about marketing yourself. I have worked as an accountant for 2 years and a management accountant for 3, therefore I am marketable to teach business courses. If you have a BA in Business with no experience, not sure how much it will count. However if you had 15 years experience working as an accountant and a BA in business, and I have an MBA... I am not sure who an University would pick.

But if you want to position yourself as the best candidate in any job, professional development and academic qualifications matter.
