I have a vocabulary question that I hope someone can help with.
Conflicts were caused by errors in ( ).
(a) translate (b) translation (c) translating
According to the Korean teacher, (b) is marked as the answer. I'd
choose (b) as well, but I can't explain why (c) would be wrong. Can
anyone explain why (c) cannot be used in the above sentence?

| translatING is in the continuous - so would have to be 'when translating' |

| Hmm, I disagree. I think 'translating' is perfectly acceptable here. It's not a participle (continuous), it's a gerund (functioning as a noun). |

| If you were using it as a gerund surely in that example it would be normal to see 'conflicts were caused by errors in the translating' |

Both (b) and (c) are options...for the same reasons given above.
However, the sentence itself is poorly constructed for that set of word.
Perhaps something like this might be better.
Conflicts were caused by ( ) errors.
Again both (b) and (c) could be used, but (b) would be an adjective(compound noun) only...and then the most probable answer given the lack of context.
(c) could be verbal...and give rise to an odd practice...though grammar texts often give errors as examples of what not to do...and then someone may find it useful to translate those errors into a second language...which could cause some conflicts.  |
