Can you use the Air Conditioner in the middle of a Hwangsa storm, I have a poorly ventilated officetel, and it does get stuffy, and during the Yellow Sand attacks from China I close all my windows.... my question is, will turning on the A/C which has a big device just outside my window, bring in Yellow Sand death, or filter that yellow stuff out.
I do have a fairly modern A/C, its a samsung about 5 years old...my guess is.
Any Ideas? |

Good question. I was thinking about this only 10 minutes ago!
My k-coworkers still insist on using AirCon in this office. (Why do women dress in flimsy clothes and then complain about the cold, they should effing dress properly).
I'm concerned about the YellowSand too. I'd swear i can feel it at the back of my throat since they turned on the aircon an hour ago. So it must be having a negative effect.
I'd keep the aircon off if it was my choice. Would the aircon filter really stop fine particles, i don't know. I'd err on the side of caution. |

If you have a one piece A/C unit (window mount type) then the only bridge between you and the sand is the filter.
If you have a 2 piece A/C unit then there is no airflow between the 2 units. It utilizes a heat exchanger and pipes liquid coolant between the 2 parts (outside with the big fan/compressor and inside on your wall). Feel free to use it.
Do make sure that you clean the filter on the wall mounted unit from time to time.

I live in a tiny room as well, and I think the unit I have is just the cooling radiator with a fan and pipes for the coolant to go outside, which is what I've seen in most one-rooms / officetels.
I think in that case it wouldn't do any more or less harm than just sitting in the room with the windows shut, seeing as how no air is pumped in or out, just coolant in the pipes and air blowing over it? |

And why would you use an A/C now? |

I had considered it, but since the worst of it was over in a day, we just kept the windows closed. The big thing is to be prepared in advance. |

I wanted to turn the A/C on during the yellow dust. With my windows closed my officetel was up to 26 celsius and even with a fan and humidifier going it felt stuffy in there, plus I was feeling a bit warm and feverish. Thanks for the info, ttompatz! |

The filters in most air conditioner units like that will be worthless against yellow dust. Buy an air cleaner/filter system if you want clean air. If you just want to cool the air, then fine. |

The worst of the yellow dust is over?!!
Tell that to my raspy throat.
Seriously, this country could do worse than to embrace the concept of filtering and managing the air circulating in some of these school buildings. I can taste the dust in my air conditioned office and the air in the hallways is far worse. |
