So much for being discreet:
A friend of mine (Ph.D) at our school recently applied with another Korean school. The new job is at a top university (think top 5), and provides tenure. Our school does not provide foreign Ph.D's with the possibility of tenure.
Unfortunately, my coworker did not get the job, and has found himself in the unfortunate position of fearing for renewal at our school. The problem is that the school he is applying for CALLED our school to ask about him. Quite unprofessionally, they TOLD our school he was looking! My coworker learned about this from one of our Korean coworkers who overheard it being discussed by our staff.
Nice.
Really, really feel for the guy. I hope he doesn't get booted over this. |
Well if this person used his current job as a REFERENCE, then he should have expected PROSPECTIVE EMPLOYERS to CONTACT his current employer. There is nothing wrong with this, nor is it unprofessional.
It may have been bad timing or bad form, but it certainly is not outragous or unprofessional. At any rate, the employer or hiring committee should have contacted the applicant once his application made it to the review stage and told him they would, at some point in the near future, contact his references.
Contacting references can be done at the application review stage, just prior to the interview stage or after the interview as a final check.
The university I worked for told all applicants that made it to the interview stage that their provided references would be contacted. We do the same thing here at my current public sector job except that we do not require permission, we just call the provided references. The responsibility to notify references they will be contacted rests with the applicant.
I often called references that had no idea they had been listed as a reference by their employee. That made for an interesting conversation!
Also, you are taking this pretty personal as it did not happen to you but rather to your friend.
Good luck to him anyway, with his qualifications, he will find a job at some point. He could conceivable find work as a guest lecturer in his area of expertise if no tenure-track positions open up. |
