My nominee for Michael Dukakis Bloodless Answer of the Week Award:
| Quote: |
I don't feel the it's ever appropriate to celebrate any death, whether it's Hitler's death, Osama's death, or celebrating the deaths of innocent civilians like Osama did. This isn't an occasion for joy or happiness, but rather a somber and fitting closing to a chapter in American and world history.
|
For those too young to remember Dukakis' answer:
Q: "Governor, if Kitty Dukakis were raped and murdered, would you favor an irrevocable death penalty for the killer?"
A: And Dukakis answered instantly and smoothly. "No, I don't, Bernard," he said. "And I think you know that I've opposed the death penalty during all of my life."
There are many possible ways to show human feeling, then contrast it with a cool, objective legal system or legal principle. While it may be intellectually odd to celebrate the death of Hitler--a man responsible for the death of millions and millions--it is even odder not to feel and express relief at the end of a monster. There is nothing wrong with ambiguity. There is definitely something wrong with a system that produces the kind of stark black/white certainty that doesn't allow condemnation of evil. (I have no problem whatsoever with considering the deaths of thousands of innocents as evil. Sue me.) |

It isn't right that a 100,000 people in Iraq are dead but Osama definitely deserved his comeuppance. Those things are not mutually exclusive. I do hate when people throw around the word 'innocents' for 3000 people when in the third world that many people are dying every day(mmm i didn't actually count this) who didn't deserve it and never had any hope or any chance at all. Just because people are American doesn't make them any more special or any more innocent.
This 'war on terror' bs has to stop...hopefully this leads to America pulling out faster. |

| Pictures of a dead 'Bin Laden' show a beard a little darker than we saw in other videos of him. Still, if he were still kickin' around I'm sure he wouldn't hesistate to let everyone know about it. |

Really you got a link for this because I'm calling complete bull on this statement.
The war crimes that you committed and what we know of are a complete disgrace. You go marching into countries and think you can do what the hell you like, fact is you can't, and you'll gain nothing from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Oh, and why throw his body into the sea. Smells like more American b.s. to me!!! |
Seriously you sound like one of those Canucks or Brits that bashes everything America does mainly because you're jealous and have a massive inferiority complex.
So the day some evil SOB hijacks your planes and crashes them into your buildings killing thousands and harming tens of thousands of you people.... then goes on for the next decade basically thumbing his nose at your dead and making more attempts to kill your people, that's the day when you'll see things the way we do. And thats the day you pansy hippie liberals will grow a damn spine and stop *beep* footing around every issue.
People can say "oh it was an attack against the West and democracy so it was attach against us all" bullpucky. It was an attack against America and America served that evil f** justice today with an M16 round to the head.

| They should have done to Bin laden what was done to Mussolini. Strip him completely naked and take photos of him with people smiling around his corpse. Then take him out back, string him up and let people take turns clubbing him and pissing on him. Oh, but that would offend the "moderate" muslims, wouldn't it? |

Bin Laden was just a figurehead. This is no victory. There are still thousands of Islamic fundamentalists out there even more determined than before to strike against the 'infidel'.
You can't have a victory against so-called "terrorist" enemies. They will keep coming at you until they feel their causes are addressed. The more you kill them the more they will be replaced by those who support them.
If the US really wants to win the war on terror, they should first do something about the huge mistake that is Israel. It's the central problem. |

I think you've made an understandable mistake; this thread is about American joyous triumphalism. Helpful (read: condescending) advice is not welcome.
