|
|
Hi Everyone,
Back here in the States, I like to be a "gym rat" (i.e. go six times a week, at all hours of the day or night). I'm hoping to find something comparable.
Can you guys recommend how to find a gym with:
a. Good hours (preferably 24 hours, but at least 6am-midnight)?
b. Good weight system and cardio (i.e. free weights plus stationery bikes, treadmills, etc.)
c. Towel service
d. Price (preferably under $100 USD a month).
Thanks for the consideration |

They exist, but you're going to pay over $100 month for them. They're also incredibly cardio-centric and have very poor selections of free weights. Most of the "good" gyms are in the more expensive areas of Seoul. Where are you? |

If you pay for a years membership up front it ends up being anywhere from 40-60 a month, depending on where you live. It's not so bad. |

Not necessarily true.
First off, OP, you should drop the word "hometown" from your vocabulary. Seriously, nip that in the bud or you're already off to a rough start not only in what you're looking for here, but for how people will react to you every time you use it.
Second, there are PLENTY of gyms around Seoul that have decent cardio and weights and have membership fees of around $50-$75/month. I've lived all over the city and have never had a problem finding a place in the $150-200 for 3 months range. A lot depends on where you live and it will take a bit of shopping around. Most places are not going to blow your mind, but will have enough equipment to get the job done.
Happy hunting. |

Yeah, Gangnam? Scratch what I said. Good luck finding a gym that's not less than $130 a month.
The answer: Get your own weights and a small bench. |

if you're paying $100/month for the gym then you're getting hosed unless your gym also has a hot tub.
i pay 150K for 3 months, my gym is open 6a-12a and closed on sundays, the gym also has a co-ed sauna. my co-workers go to a 24 hr gym in gangnam and they pay like 40K/month.
when i lived out in the country i only paid 30K/month. in all places the gyms had showers, towels and provided you with a locker and uniform.
i mainly powerlift and every gym i've been to has had ample free weights and dumbbells, as well as various machines and a f-ton of treadmills, bikes and elliptical machines. |

40 -60k a month? agreed. several around.
You powerift and every gym has had ample free weights? negative. I've been a member of several gyms and one one had dumbells over 40kgs. Not a big problem to work around it however.
tons of treadmills? jesus yes. ellipitical machines? not so much. |

like i said, every gym i've been to has had enough free weights for me to do whatever i want to do. as long as you have plates you can powerlift and i've never seen a gym without enough plates.
the one problem i've run into is that i haven't seen a lot of huge gyms like back home, generally there are only 1-2 benches so you might find yourself waiting around to use them...keep in mind that koreans (younger ones at least) are ridiculously slow and like to chat on the phone taking up space between sets. |

Jamaica. I was at the branch in Seoul Dae (Seoul National University), they are open all day, and even have a (normal dry and unisex) sauna inside the weight room. And they rent clothes.... and they have their spinning bikes outside, instead of normal bikes, so that's pretty nice. |

I live in the Apgujeong area. While there are many fancy and superb gyms that are incredibly expensive, there are smaller neighborhood gyms that are about 40-60 a month if you pay for the whole year up front. My husband and I toured quite a few in the area and found some good deals.
The only way you'd have to go to one of the super expensive gyms is if you are a bodybuilder and need heavier weights than usual (over 60kg for freeweights); that kind of workout doesn't seem to be as popular in this area.
BTW, CarolinaTHeels did you go to Carolina or are you just a fan? |

Any gyms in Seoul that offer any plans less than 3 months?
If not, I'll probably just end up running outdoors and finding one of those parks where I can exercise on the apparatuses they have set-up. |
