Thoughts?
I'm thinking about moving to Korea this summer to teach for a year. 22, straight out of college, etc. They seem like the real deal. Someone told me that they are like the "Ivy League" of Korea, but other than that, I know nothing.
Which is a good segway into my next point... It's hard to distinguish for prospective teachers which programs are better than others. Any advice? Public vs. private? Which programs are the best? So far I've applied to places like: Lex Kim, CDI, Adventure Teaching, Ask Now, ESL Resource Group, etc.

I have a friend who taught for Lex Kim for three years. He liked the job, the pay was good, but he ended up getting screwed with an 11th month firing, so beware of that. I'm not sure if that is standard practice for that particular hagwon, but it's something to be aware of. I've also been told that the owner is a bit of a nutcase. |

Warning: Off Topic
Reading the thread made me think this would be cool:
Lex Luthor Academy
Hagwon for Super Villains

I will tell you some small part for choosing public vs private:
In Public school, you may never be alone in class
You stay on site for 8 hrs a day
Mandatory trips/dinners with staff
You get paid on time, with pension and medical
Private school, you will always be alone in class
You might stay on site for 8 hrs a day (possible split-shifts)
Possibly be forced to work Saturdays
You might not get paid on time, might not get pension nor medical.
Hope this helps

I've worked with kids who did Lex before and they were good.
(btw: "segue". "Segway" is an ill-conceived two-wheel vehicle.) |

Its the all too common practice of Hagwons firing employee's on the 11th month as to not pay any severance pay.
Most don't provide health insurance or pension even when they advertise they do.
How fun does it sound to make an unexpected VISA run outside of the country on a day's notice? |
