My contract ends May 31st but I am planning on staying in the country until the end of June, leaving for 10 days, and then returning on a tourist visa until August. Do you know if I will get in trouble for waiting until the end of June before leaving? Should I go to immigration and get a sojourn extension? I'm not sure the protocol and I haven't been able to find out.

Thanks!

Contract expires May 31. When does your ARC expire. It makes a HUGE difference in your options.

You have to:
A) LEAVE before your ARC expires or
C) leave within 14 days of your contract expiry (if your ARC is good for longer) or
C) report the end of your contract, show your exit ticket and get an extension to your stay for up to 30 days beyond the end of your contract.

What you do when you come back is not relevant ( you will be on a tourist stamp and not on your E2).

i'm in a similar situation: ARC expires 2011.08.05, but I will be going with my co-teacher to hand in my ARC to immigration on May 11th. FYI: I ended my contract early (supposed to end sometime in August). I was planning on staying in Korea till the 31st though- what should I do?

You can't hand in your ARC until you are going through passport control at the airport.

If you are going with your co-teacher to cancel your visa then immigration will give you 30 days to get your affairs in order and either transfer to a new job or leave Korea.

Ah, that's a relief.

However, I was planning on applying in person for my lump-sum pension and I saw online that I will be needing my ARC to do so. What then?

(thank you, by the way).

You cannot hand in your ARC before you are actually, physically LEAVING Korea (at passport control on the way out) so you will have it when you apply for your pension refund.

You can go to the local pension office to apply for your pension refund any time within the last 30 days of employment.
