|

I haven't really looked into this for a while, but what are some of the best consumer camcorders at the moment in terms of brand names and specific models?
I'm not sure whether I should invest into a good dSLR with HD video or just get a camcorder and stick to my old dSLR. Any suggestions? |

Pick up a Canon 7d or something with the 17-85mm IS USM lens (not the best lens in the world, but will do the job). a 50 1.8 will also be great for those low light situations. I've also never bought a camera new and don't plan on doing so anytime soon (and I've had a lot of cameras) so consider that as well.

The new Nikon D5100 is a great DSLR that can shoot full-time autofocus with 1080p video |

What's your budget? That would be a starting point. Then I can help you some more. |

Where could I buy that second hand in Korea? I've never bought dSLRs second hand...wouldn't the shutter life kind of mean that I would be getting a half dead camera?
I already have both lenses for a Canon dSLR and would prefer sticking to Canon, but not sure what model to pick at the moment.
Nikon camera seems pretty cool too and is a lot cheaper, but I wonder which of the two would be better? Nikon seems newer.
From what I've read about it, it's a semi-pro camera with a few minor problems.
Also, originally I was looking into 5d mark II, but realized it's a little out of my league and way too expensive for what I would be using, so that's definitely out of the question. 3000$+ would be a good investment if I had a huge project going on, but I don't |

The cheapest Eos 550D I could find is about 550k won. It was tempting but I think it's one of the display items (can't determine shutter count by myself). First time upgrading to DSLR, it scared me and just opted for a new 60D (cheapest, accessible that I could find is 1.2 mil won.
There are 2 other people selling their 550D for about 1.08k won and 1.01k won along with some extras. My only source was Danawa and Naver. |

Full time autofocus on a dslr? Wouldn't that be noisy? |

so I went to Costco and Emart today
Costco is all out of Canons and only have Nikons left
Emart had 550d for 1045k
600d for 1140k
60d for 1450k
I played with all three and was sort of disappointed with 600k plasticky feel (compared to previous rebel models)
60d handles really well, but they only had a display model, which looked too used.
So I'm thinking of buying this on either gmarket/auction or Danawa, but i've never bought electronics from either site. Should I be aware of anything? Especially Danawa since I've never even heard of that site until a few days ago and the prices there are quite competitive! |

I just received my 60D this afternoon, payed yesterday cash.
The initial cost was 1,402,000 won. Along with the triple lens package (No 7) which is 945,000 would total 2,347,000 won. Having a bit of hard time with the credit card and whatever it is that's not letting me pay, I think they thought I was having second thoughts so they threw in bonuses (offered 16 Gig card instead of 8 Gig, plus another 2 Gig card). And when I mentioned my card problem, they offered the whole as 2,120,000 won if payed in cash.
If I were to buy the whole package individually from Canon.com (they recommended their store in Gangnam) it'll cost me about 3 mil or more.
I only examined the items physically one-at-a-time, as I unboxed them all. They're fine. Tested video recording and all of them work very well (I haven't taken any shots yet... kinda scared of bringing it outside on it's first day).
I don't know if it could get any cheaper than that. |

Right now I'm also looking into getting a DSLR that also shoots good quality video. Primary purpose is for travel. I've traveled before with both and it's just too bulky and sometimes overkill.
One thing that the OP needs to consider is the "Rolling Shutter Effect" that DSLRs have. So far the Panasonic GH2 does the best in this category. RSE is a serious problem when shooting video IMO.
This guy does a pretty good review of both the Panny and the Canon

Because I want to shoot both video and stills, I'm going with the Panasonic GH2. It's also smaller than the rest, which suits it more for travel. Plus, a smaller camera is better for taking more street shots as it will be less intrusive (just look at the size of the Panny with the 20mm pancake lense!) The Panny is more expensive though. FYI Check out the Voigtlander 24mm lense with the 0.95 F stop, super bright! |

thanks for the link, but it sounds like a pretty bad camera compared to 60d according the the reviewer
bad build
bad screen
needs an adaptor for a mic
confusing manual/abbreviations
confusing menu
rolling shutter effect is almost as bad as 60d
more expensive than 60d
very basic controls on the back of the camera (entry level camera style)
basic functions
the biggest downside is that it's more expensive though
Usually, for traveling I just use my smart phone camera for filming, but if I want a high quality vid with lens effects, especially if you're going to be hiking/climbing through jungles, you may want to get something more sturdy and water proof like 60d or even 7d hehe |

the 600d canon would be pretty good for video,it has hd capabilities and is better for video shooting that the 60d, though the 60d is a better camera for photographing.
The 600d is also a full time auto focus for videos and yes the built in mic will pickup the focusing noise. |
