I'm in the same situation as the OP, and this thread has been a wealth of information. However, I do plan to attend graduate school next year, so if I were to go to Korea I'd need to be back in the states around august next year. Would that make this an impossible endeavor for me, seeing as most hagwon jobs seem to be year long contracts?

Possibly, what is your documents status?

Umm, the only documents I have ready... well, I'm fortunate to already have my passport, so I wouldn't have to do anything regarding that. But with respect to the checklist you posted at the bottom of the first page of the thread, I've not gotten anything ready. But, I think the only thing that actually takes a long time to get ready IS in fact the passport, right? I have my diploma on hand, and getting that notarized apparently only takes a day. So, looking at that checklist the biggest thing to worry about is the CBC, which would take 7-8 weeks tops, from what you posted.

Is that everything you mean when you mention documents? Oh, and I have no TEFL certification, and though that may hurt my chances, from what I understand it isn't necessary.

On a related note I'm considering taking the plunge and relocating from Taiwan to Korea since the job market here is not good at the moment. The pay/hr is still comparable to Korea although Korea has much better benefits. But I see myself getting stuck with a part time job again (14-18 hrs/wk) and that results in a huge earnings difference obviously.

The CBC check looks confusing but possible to get done without going home. Transcripts, diploma, medical check, etc... seem easy to take care of. But what is this consulate interview? I haven't seen it mentioned in this thread as a reqt but I've seen it in other threads and it can only be done in your home country (or Guam if you're from the US). Not really interested in paying for a flight home and then moving my stuff from Taiwan to Korea.

Assuming you're American, I think you're shooting a bit low on the time. My CBC took about five weeks to get back, which is on the low end, and it can take up to a month to get the certification done. Also, take into account that it's really only after you have all those documents that you can get a job lined up. It's not impossible that you could find something that fits your schedule, but after receiving all your documents you're going to have a pretty small window of opportunity to find a job and get your visa processed (worth taking into account, as it can take up to two weeks). Basically, you're going to need to find a school so desperate to hire a teacher that they'll take you with about two weeks notice. It's possible, sure, but you're not really going to be able to cover all your bases in terms of finding a decent job.

You've got it backwards. Sorry to say it, but the soonest you could feasibly start is probably around September. The apostille can take 1 day for the diploma. The Passport is about 3 weeks. The FBI CBC is around 2-3 months to get done and apostilled.

For what it's worth, I just got my docs done:

Passport: 2 weeks from when I sent it
Diploma apostille: 1 day if you live in the your state's capital, longer if you have to send it by mail. Took me about 2 weeks.
FBI CBC: 1 month to get it back for the initial check, one month to get the apostille.

Altogether you're looking at at least early august before you can have all your docs ready... then you actually have to find a decent job, do a consulate interview, pack up and go. I doubt you'd be able to go before early September.

First time E-2 holders and people who go home/run need to get new docs and do a consulate interview. Sadly you'll have to do it if you want an E-2 visa, but you could always call them and tell them where you are and that you can't afford to do it, and they might let you get by without it.

Now I'm seeing the problem. It's the two months that a CBC can take before you start applying for jobs that will start in 1-2 months. If I'm going to wait that long then I might as well stay in taiwan since the big hiring period is August. I'm just sick of waiting and eating into my savings.

For those in states:

If time is really of the essence then you might want to drive to the capital and get your apostille same day, if possible. That's what i did but my state is super small (Delaware). I did my CBC and diploma on the same day. Just as a note make sure you get the CBC notarized by the FBI in order to get it apostille. Normally you put a letter with your documents explaining your needs to get it done. If not then get it notarized at like UPS.
