My point about better options still stands.

Can I get an example of a better option? Or at least an answer as to why my current options aren't satisfactory?

You mentioned a couple schools that are highly recommended against (CDI and Slave Labor Program). Until we see contracts we can't, but realize that your job is going to eat up a lot of your time, and if you end up a crappy job it's not going to matter if you're in Haeundae or ten minutes away in Gwangali. I'm not speaking about options in terms of locations, I'm talking about options in terms of jobs. Haeundae, being largely a tourist area, isn't absolutely loaded with hagwons.

Whew thanks for the tip! Suddenly kind of glad I hadn't interviewed with either of the thumbs down schools (Slave Labor Program, REALLY Shocked ). Any word on Avalon or YBM ECC? I looked on the boards but couldn't get any concrete reviews on the specific Haeundae locations...

But if Gwangali is seriously that close I'll definitely look at it a little closer!

CDI flagrantly violates labor law.

SLP doesn't allow you to talk to your coworkers.

Eh? Can you explain?

Have you ever been there in summer? The place makes Mecca during Hajj seem dead.

You're right there. I was there in July last year and it was standing room only on the beach. They herded everyone in the sea into a narrow section about twenty metres wide and you could hardly even see water through the bodies. There were families of three generations setting up makeshift picnic areas on the concrete promenade like a scene out of a refugee camp. Give me a nice quiet stroll in Myeongdong on a Saturday afternoon any day

SLP has a policy of no socializing at work. You can talk about school, but are not allowed to talk about anything else (at all). When you're there, you work, and nothing is permitted that strays from that at all.

Really?

I assume you worked there so how do they go about enforcing this?

Curious about this too. You wouldn't happen to have a copy of your contract that you could pull that "no socializing" clause from, would you?

I didn't work there, but one of my current coworkers worked at the Suwon location for three years, and one of my college friends worked at the Kangnam location for a year. I've spoken to them and their friends about the policy, and my understanding is that it is written into the contract.

Thanks for the response.

Interesting that one person worked there for 3 years despite this clause....

Yes, once you decide it's a job you might be interested in. It's too risky for you to just put your faith into the recruiter.

Sure enough, asked the recruiter to put me in contact with current teachers and I haven't heard from her since. SO that means definitely no Slave Labor for me (regardless of whether or not you can talk on the job)!

Calling that job or school Slace Labor is just dumb (sorry).

Not one foreign teacher in Korea is anything close to being a slave nor do any perform slave labor.

Bad jobs...sure

But you can ALWAYS LEAVE.

Good luck to you.

Please, it's a joke based on the school's acronym, commonly used by its teachers at various branches.

I work at Avalon in Haeundae, and know that there is not a June opening.

When I first arrived, everyone was happy with the school and content with the way things were, considering themselves lucky to have landed such a job. This past week has been rough because they're implementing new policies that seem unreasonable and unfair, and it's causing some stress for all of us. It's too soon to say what the long-term effects of this will be, but if you do show up here this summer, you won't find happy coworkers.

A joke in very bad taste.

There are many ways to qualify a bad place to work. Slave Labor is not one of them...it just shows ignorance on the part of the people using that expression.
