The foot dragging. It drives me crazy. Pick up your G-- d--- feet, people! On a related note, I now also despise colorful plastic sandals (flip-flops are still okay, though).

Family Values. Most tell me about the importance of marriage, kids, family--but most men do not want to return home to their wives and kids; most women, particularly single women, don't want to attend family functions.

As a kid, family wedding, get-to-togethers at Grandpas or Nanas, holiday parties were the highlights of the year. In Korea, its just a much needed day off.

When the person's annoyed or perplexed and making that sound, it doesn't bother me a bit. It's when the person makes that sound and then commences to lie to me, that's when I start imagining a bus running over them.

I thought the whole point of that sound was to let you know there was a big white lie a comin'.

I hated this long before I came to Korea.

Considering how a huge portion of marriages in Korea are based off of power/money/status/family ties/religion, can we really be surprised when couples don't want to see each other? They hate each others' guts because they're not friends prior to marriage, just accomplices. And considering how single K women are treated, is it any wonder why they hate to spend time with older, simple-minded and "old-fashioned" (misogynistic) generations?

Some people get freaked out when a K girl they meet doesn't have a good relationship with her parents. For the most part, I've only ever seen it as a sign of sanity, or at least critical skepticism of the norms of Korean society.

Are you guys really in China? Seems like we only get reports about how horrible China is recently.

You sure you're not some Korean recruiter trying to slow the flow of teachers from Korea to China? *laugh*

I have travelled in China. Beijing is not bad, but when I was in the south... it can get absolutely as bad or worse than what they mentioned here. Spitting and smoking in buses (with the windows closed, even when the bus is stopped), spitting out food on the floor, throwing shells and chewed pieces of bamboo on the floor, horrible air that gives you a never ending cough (which went away one or two days after I left). The heating they use in that area is mostly charcoal, which doesn't burn very cleanly and mucks up air inside. Air outside can vary depending on where you are from good to horrible. People smoking everywhere made me want to kill something. I had previously only seen it that bad in Jordan. That said, when I was some place or other it wasn't so bad, it was travelling from one place to another that was the worst.

I remember on one bus I was sitting next to a Chinese couple from Beijing or Shanghai.. and their reactions were exactly the same as mine to all the above, so it really really depends on where in China you are talking about.

Monster crowds whenever you want to do something like hiking, going to the park. More population control, please.

Have you actually gone hiking in some of the more remote and interesting national parks? Lots of places with very few people out there.

i hear ya, man. i think pretty much all south of beijing would qualify into your experience, and north also. china is still ultimately a 3rd world country. tourism here is a bad idea that will feel like a rip off once you've gone. if you wanna see what china can become, go to beijing/shanghai. if you wanna see what it is, don't go to china at all- you don't wanna know. i highlighted your statement above because it mirrored my thoughts exactly

PatrickGHBusan, where do you and your Korean family go hiking? Korean heaven? Which is better, heaven or Korea? Maybe there's no heaven, so Korea is better than heaven! PatrickGHBusan, Korea is better than heaven, isn't it? Razz

The blind nationalism shown by some (usually) older people does grate, although I still see the funny side of it.

The whole notion of workplace rank going to the elder, not usually the better person still rankles my sense justice. That younger Korean's still put up with it is amazing. To many people in the Korean society are just sheep, far worse than their western counterpart sheep Very Happy
