|

So as stated in the title, looking to do a wee bit of overtime so I can spoil myself with a lovely new camera.
I've never owned a DSLR before, I'm not a big photographer but I want to start.
I've been looking at the SLT-A55VL,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5VIY2at_q4,
and it looks pretty damn amazing.
Does anyone have any input on Sony for DSLRs? Or should I stay on the safe side by sticking with Cannon or Nikon?
The camera is going for just over 1,000,000 online. |

it really depends on how far you plan on taking photography. if you plan on simply using it to snap some photos here and there, any entry level dSLR will do the trick, whether it be Nikon, Canon or Sony, imo.
however, if you think that you are going to really start doing it semi/seriously, i would look into the lenses that each company offers first. bodies come and go, but lenses are what makes the SLR world so great
each company has their specialty, availability, price, etc in regards to lenses. see which you think will fit you best. (although you stated that you want to start photography so you may not necessarily know what you want to shoot and how yet) |

the smartest/safe move would be to get an entry level dSLR and see if you like it or not.
entry level cameras are still way way better than anything you've ever owned before, cost cheap and are easier to use than the semi-pro or pro cameras
One of the best entry dSLR is, in my opinion, digital rebel from Canon
(they've just released a new 600d model, but it's quite pricey right now, so try to get 500d/550d which is way way cheaper)
I started on 350d 4 years ago and it's a great little camera!
Also once you pick a brand name, you'll have to stick to it because all the lenses you buy will only work on that brand (so if you go Canon, you'll have to stick with Canon, if you pick Sony, stick with Sony...btw Canon has the best lenses too:)
You could even look around and get a really cheap 450d for like 400-500$ with a lens. So you'll save a ton and can get a much better lens with the money you save
PS with dSLR, the camera itself doesn't matter as much as the lens. better lens=better camera |

Some good info here.
A year ago I was in the same spot, and went and got the cheapest DSLR available. I knew a little about photography "basics" and this gave me a new tool to put things into action. Here I am a year later wanting to upgrade my body and/or get some gear.
I'm not sure what advice you should take from that. I'm still not sure if I made the right decision by getting a cheaper, less-functional model or not. I know I've learned a lot from it, and taken about 5,000 shots in the past year. I guess, if you know something about photography, maybe look at the slightly above entry-level (where it seems you're looking). If not, save yourself $3-400 and get the cheaper one, I suppose. Also, play around with this link. Great tool.

Really great advice, thanks a lot for all the information.
That link you provided was very good too, thanks.
The Sony camera I was looking at is pretty expensive, and that's without a lens too. So I'll be spending a good few hundred on a beginner lens also.
I've also been keeping an eye on the;
Cannon EOS-1100D.
I do want a starter camera, but one that is relatively new so it has enough features i can eventually take advantage of when i become a bit more adapt at using it.
I don't know much about lenses but how much do you think a good starter lens would cost me?
Something I could use to play around with various kinds of shots? |

The Entry-level kits usually come with an 18-55mm. You'll want to make sure it has stabilization, but most new ones do nowadays anyway, so nbd.
Happy shopping! Take the time to learn and you'll get a lot of joy out of the photos you take! |

I've always been a fan of Pentax, used them for nearly 20 years already. Kept with it when I went digital.
They're not huge in Korea, but I've been seeing the new K-x more lately.
Seems to be more being sold here too from a look on gmarkt/danawa.
I don't know that you can really make a bad choice going with either Nikon, Cannon or Pentax.
They've all got their strengths and weaknesses. |

The Pentax K-5 looks AWESOME, and it's weatherproof, nice for shooting in rugged locations. Also, it takes any of the older used Pentax lenses that you can easily find on Ebay. Downside is the video quality. |

you guys using fake batteries or original batteries ?
I have found over the years with my P/s cameras that the fakes ones start off good, but after about a 1 year of more they start dying and become useless...
I'm gonna buy a canon dslr so just wondering.. |

Korea is a lot more Canon friendly, so I'd go with that
more lenses (second hand or brand new) and way more support than other brands imo
the best entry level canon at the moment is d600, which is a pretty awesome camera! |
