I'm home in Vancouver for the week and I'm considering picking up a 32GB iPod touch while I'm here. I've never owned any Apple products so please forgive my ignorance.

1) When putting music on it, is it necessary to use iTunes? I've owned Sonys and Creatives before, and I've always just drag-and-dropped whatever I wanted on to the device and I like that.
2) Can I play any format-compatible file on it, or does it check the legality of the files (i.e. downloaded stuff)?
3) Do they come with a USB charger?

Thanks

Incidentally, you can drag and drop your music once you open up iTunes, the difference being, you're generally dragging and dropping albums instead of folders.

iTunes provides a tremendous amount of functionality for your iPod. Personally, I think the people who don't like it either don't understand it, or just simply haven't used it.

It comes with a usb cord that will charge when connected to the computer, but there isn't a wall charger if that's what you're asking.

If you're looking for a wall charger just buy one here otherwise as Riley mentioned it charges via any USB port (providing it's USB 2.0 as most computers are)

oooooor you could get a Galaxy S player which is way cooler in my opinion, cheaper and doesn't need itunes, but can use itunes anyway.

They were pretty well prices at Costco last time I went and I'd avoid getting apple products from now on because:
1 - every IOS software update on iPod touch costs 9.99$ unless you do it illegally
2 - can't change the battery, unless you pay them 150$ish for battery replacement. I bought my itouch 2 years ago and it used to last 5-6 hours with medium use, now it only lasts 1.5-2 max and it annoys the heck out of me because I have to carry the bulky charger with me at all times

Galaxy S player is basically the same device using free android OS and has features that ipod touch doesn't

the only real advantage to having an itouch is games, but if you need a portable game device, you might as well get a PSP or go bigger and get an ipad

1) Not if you use sharepod. It allows you to drag and drop (more or less) the way you like. It can also run off the ipod itself so you don't have to install it on multiple computers.

Itunes sucks on PC IMO; it's bloaty and unnecessarily restrictive. Sadly, it used to be nice a few years ago (haven't used it since it started converting into m4p instead of mp3). I'm sure it's been improved since, but I'm already soured on it.

2) It can play mp3 and m4p, not sure about others. If you use itunes, it will convert all others to m4p (ugh). Maybe it converts to mp3 again, not sure.

3) It comes with ONLY a usb charger, which sucks b/c usb charging is slow. Wall adapters aren't expensive tho (got one in yongsan for 5k).

Basically plays mp4 format, apple lossless, and good ole mp3. Also does not check for "legality of the files". PS "illegal files" just don't have drm like the majority of mp3's so not something that will happen.

It was really expensive, IMO. About the same price as an iTouch.
