okay, first off, sorry if this has already been posted elsewhere. I did a search but couldn't find anything.

I was just wondering what are typical breaks in hogwans.

I just had an interview with a Reading Town hogwan and when I asked about the scedule (after several minutes of confusion - not sure if this was language barrier or evasion) she said that you will sometimes teach six 50 minutes lessons back to back without a break!

bearing in mind you only get 10 days holiday a year, that seems killer to me.

What sorta breaks are the rest of you currently getting?

PS - that was the 2nd interview of the day. The first opened with, "How tall are you?"

I guess you need to make a decision. Do you want all your classes together, meaning you can leave earlier or work later, or do you want it spread out?

The main concern should be TOTAL number of classes each week. Then, daily schedule. If you can handle 6 classes, I personally suggest this as it will give you more time off other days.

This week I teach 8 classes Tuesday and 8 classes Thursday. I get Fridays off and this week Monday and Wednesday. They told me I will have to teach at another school when they get students, but for now I am enjoying my time off when I can get it.

If you don't like this, then it is a personal preference and you should look for a school with different schedule.

Also, they said "sometimes", so this might mean once every 5 months. Try to get a copy of their current schedule.

But aren't the classes just one element of the job.

The day is 1.30pm - 9.30pm

When I asked what made up the remaining 3 hours, she said paperwork - report cards, lesson plans etc.

The recruiter has now come back to me and said I get 2.5 hrs of breaks. Which is obvioulsy completely different.

If I just do my five hours of teaching back to back and then bugger off home for the day then obviously that's different.

Again, look at the total number of hours.

THE TOTAL NUMBER OF HOURS.

Don't try to divide this stuff up. If you agree to teaching and office hours, then you agree to teaching and office hours. Treat it ALL as 1 job, 1 pay.

1. If you have to teach and then do office hours, do YOU want to do this?
2. If you have to teach, do office hours, then teach some more, do YOU want to do this?
3. If you teach and then go home, is this the only thing acceptable to YOU?

When it comes down to decision making, YOU are the man. YOU are the head cheese. YOU decide.

For example, if I agreed to 30 hours, teaching and office hours, I would teach and do the office hours. I wouldn't do 31 hours without overtime pay.

You need to look at the total number of hours and decide. Don't divide the numbers up.

That's way too much work. I'd tell them to get real...and if they didn't I would get out.
