My employer had me sign a power of attorney form the other day. I didn't read it all too well and was just curious as to what it was for. Is it common for employers in Korea to have you sign one? is it just for medical care while I stay in Korea?

why the hell would you sign something like that? that has got to be the stupidest thing I've heard on here today.

Employer - "Gee, I want to screw my employee. Let me just sign this paper that says "I want my boss to screw me" and it's legal because that sap gave me power of attorney."

Really? This seemed like a good idea to you?

I've signed power of attorney over to the guy who handles foreigners at my school on a few separate occasions. If you want someone to deal with immigration stuff for you (i.e. you have to work), you need to sign over power of attorney. Is it possible they needed it for this?

That said, I have a long, very good relationship with my school and I know they won't cheat me. I wouldn't sign it over carte blanch to a new school without any reason given for me to do so. When I've done it there has been a specific reason for me to do so.

that sounds like a baaaaaad idea. you need to check when the power of attorney ends. if there's no end date, you're screwed.

Yeah, that sounds like what it is. I didn't realize they needed a POA to deal with immigration on my behalf. Thanks.

I haven't done this in awhile, so I don't remember, but I know in the case of my school I've had to do it on three different occasions (two for immigration, one for the foreign liaison to pick up a package for me), so I assume there's an end date on it, though I can't recall, to be honest.

There is special power of attorney, also known as limited power of attorney. That's for a specific action. Then there is general power of attorney, which is for almost any purpose the designated person can think of. AFAIK, you do not need to sign powers of attorney for Immigration issues as you can designate someone to pick up your documentation at the Immigration office using, conveniently, the forms said Immigration has for that very purpose.
