I'm having a hard time finding a decent job. Well, anything that pays over 2.1 to start. And a job that doesn't require me to be thee from 1-10. I should mention I have been in Korea for 4 years. Are all jobs like this now? I'm wondering if I shouldn't cut my loses, cash in my pension and head off to China.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

1) How long have you been looking? Jobs are taking c.6 weeks average now.
2) Have you got a good photo? this is more important than many people realise. If not...get a haircut, put on a suit, get a professional shot done.

Depends on the individual. Totally.

I'm not saying I intend to work at a hogwon forever, but I'm quite happy here...and my last 2 visits home have simply confirmed that I like the west less and less each time.

I think it's just about the best advice that can be given. At the very least someone should gain additional qualifications (starting with a teaching degree or a useful master's). Korea is a pretty good gig but pay (at hagwons) starts to flatline at a certain point because they can always find (and HIRE) a newbie for a lower wage.

Does pay increase in the public school system if you resign or have experience?

I figure that most people who don't start an M.A. program after the second year in Korea must be nuts for not getting out by the 4th year. Working at hagwons for the rest of your life is for the birds.

I mean, if you're gonna be in Korea that long, you may as well get paid loads and work decent hours.

Glad to hear you don't have student loans there, Richie Rich!

A single person should be able to pay off student loans from an undergrad degree within a few years here.

When the Canadian dollar goes back up to pre - 2008 levels then this will surely be true. A few years becomes seven or eight. Anyhew, that's when one can start pursuing a Master's or other education if they so desire. Until then, it's keeping your head above water.

Do you mean paying off students loans in Canada while working in Korea?

If so...

Right now the average rate found for trading Won to CAD is 1 CAD = 1,128.36 KRW

That means if you send home 500 000W per month (pretty damn easy to do on a 2.1 salary) this gets you roughly 443 CAD.

Typically this is a loan payment or close to it and it is a minimum to send.

If a person focuses on paying off their loans, they can send 900 000W per month which would net them 797 CAD.

If you drop 700 CAD on your loan every month you will have dropped 16800CAD on the loan after 2 years (24 payments).

So yeah you can pay off a student loan in a couple of years and still live decently in Korea even at the current conversion rate.
