TOKYO
Two men broke into a security company office in Tachikawa, western Tokyo, early Thursday, and took off with 604 million yen in cash, the largest-ever cash haul in Japan, Tokyo police said.

The sum exceeded the previous record of 542.5 million yen stolen in a robbery at a transportation company in Tochigi Prefecture in October 2004.

The two young men entered the office wearing masks at around 3 a.m., beat a security guard with an iron pipe, forced him to reveal the code for a vault and made off with the cash in 70 bags, police said. The guard, 36, was seriously injured.

The security company received most of the cash from the Tokyo Central Post Office on Wednesday for distribution to post offices in western Tokyo.

The guard, who was tied up with adhesive tape, managed to free himself after the robbers left the office, located on the first floor of a four-story condominium, and reported the robbery to police.
