mm.. not sure about how it is today but a few years back, they were selling quite a few pepper sprays on gmarket.
they weren't the real heavy duty kind like they make in the west, though, so I had to order two humongous ones from some online store for my then-gf/present-wife.

Also, my wife's told me countless stories of encounters with pervs and overly-curious ajosshis over the years, which led me to believe that Korea's a real safe place for men but not particularly so for women. At night, I mean. You should be fine during the day.

Not sure if what you are referring to fall into this case...but just to put it out there..

I also use some of these dating sites. I know for a fact that at least some of the members of these sites are Anti-English spectrum type people. If you can read Korean some of them blatantly put it up on their profile as their user name...in that they have some issue with foreign teachers. They will come to chat with you...and within 3 minutes begin asking you about your work, why you don't teach private English lessons...etc....etc.

It may be that some of the above mentioned type people are checking you out because they are looking for some reason to take further action against you in regards to their own mission.

Be careful about carrying pepper spray. It's technically illegal to carry a concealed weapon like that in Korea. Same goes for pocket knives above a certain limit.

If you have to use it, make absolutely sure he is about to attack you in some way. If you spray him and there's any way he can deny it or spin it, you can get in serious trouble.

I had a friend that bought his Korean gf a pepper spray bottle that looked like lipstick. If you pulled the cap off it even had a lip stick tube in it so it looked legit. Even if you get caught carrying it, a cop having a bad day could take you in for it.

Same goes for larger pocket knives, brass knuckles, or anything made to be a weapon. And when it comes to foreigners, they are going to be more likely to throw the book at you for it, so just be careful.

On a side note, about stalking. I'm a member of a dating site that is geared towards foreigners in Korea. This site will show you the profile of people that come and visit your page or look at your pictures. That's all well and good... except for months now, I keep getting this 40+ old dude checking out my page. Not constantly, but at least every 6 or 8 weeks he shows up to check out my page. Wtf?

I can't believe someone would check out your page on a dating site!! I guess it would be ok for you if he was younger, but wow, 40+, he must be a real creepo.

Haha. I'm a male and my profile clearly states I'm interested in women.

Sometimes the "matchmaking" or "search" functions will pair you up with a clearly wrong match. Once every couple of months seems like an accident in a relatively small pool of random matches. Once every three days, then yeah, he is prolly thinkin' 'bout'choo.

I've had men show up in my "Matches" section, with a suggestion from the site to check out these people. I am male seeking female on the site, but guys show up in my match list sometimes...and I have even clicked the pictures to see who this person was...just trying to see if it was an ugly woman, or maybe someone posted a photo of their brother or something...and I am 40+...so...er....sorry for clicking your link, dude -- thought you were a fugly lady.... Embarassed

(actually, I know it wasn't me -- I'm not on that site...but the same thing has happened to me on POF.)

I am a male, and I would get "followed" every so often in Seoul, usually when I was walking around during the day near apartment complexes. The person following me (and it was a different man each time) would often come up to me and ask me if I would give him English lessons -- and he would offer to pay.

The men, in my case, were from immigration or some other government agency, and they were supposed to try to bust folks teaching illegal private lessons.

Your mini-stalkings may be as "innocent" as that, if it was during the day, near large apartment complexes (especially near "expensive" apartment complexes).

Just another explanation that fits the circumstances, and seems less sinister.

hahaha - Fermentation, I want to buy you a beer! And, it is long overdue.

Great, if it isn't a potential rapist, it's just a government agent making sure you stay in line. This is a perfect example of how the ROK government has its priorities right. Deploy undercover agents to bust ESL teachers but do little as possible about women being molested. Great job my government is doing. I'm sure glad to be fighting for this country!

*edit: couple of glasses of wine effect, I guess.

Dude, a private store wary of potential theives is a bit different from government agents trying to lure you into doing something illegal in order to bust you. Is the store security sweet-talking you into stealing? Or is the store operated by the government? Is teaching privates as heinous as rape or theft? Do I really need to explain the difference here? Personally I wouldn't shop in a store that treats me like a criminal. I'm just here to shop, leave me alone.

I'm not a big fan of beer but I do welcome the prospect of wine.

Ever driven past a "speed trap" in the US?

I explained that it was, indeed, annoying, but you know, there are police officers whose sole job is to check for parking violations (aka Meter Maids, or whatever the PC term is these days). Mightn't we say that they should all be reassigned to find murderers and rapists, instead of slamming people who are a few minutes late feeding the meters?

If you don't see the fallacies in your own arguments, far be it from me to try to teach you. Private lessons are illegal Razz

Yes, but meter maids don't try to entice you into an illegal parking spot then bust you for doing it, unlike immigration officers who use entrapment to bust teachers. Course, only idiots would agree to private lessons on the street with some stranger who just approached them.

Private citizens can get in on this as well. There is a bounty system that pays a reward to anyone who turns in illegal teachers and illegal schools.

No, there isn't. Immigration hasn't paid "bounties" on illegal teaching for a decade. Yes, there is a hotline to report them, but they don't pay for the tips anymore. The hagwon association in Daejeon paid rewards for turning in illegal teachers, but that was three years ago and they don't do it any longer, either.

I know Koreans doing this currently for income.

It could be the bounty only applies to turning in schools these days.

Schools breaking the law, sure. Not waegs. Fewer payouts with the former.

With a seemingly endless supply of people to replace the illegals? Much cheaper to pay to rat out the corrupt schools than to pay for the "bad" teachers.

I've heard that there used to be a bounty on pictures of traffic offenses, but they had to lift it because people were staking out the most profitable intersections and actually getting in territorial disputes. Unverified, but hilarious anyway.
