|
|
Sorry if this is over the top, but I'm wondering whether it's at all typical to be asked about plans for children or birth control, especially when married. I only ask because I formerly taught in Mexico where I had to address this question pretty thoroughly and I'd just like to be prepared.
I'm mainly speaking in reference to EPIK interviews, but also in general. Anyone have any experience or input? |

No, EPIK and other schools here will not ask you that. |

I've been asked (recently) and told them that I plan on adopting in 5-7 years, and that I don't want to carry a child. |

In Korea, if you are single you will hear a constant barrage of questions and comments about getting married. But that happens to everyone who is single, men and women, old and young, foreigner and Korean. |

Just say you have no plans and will be able to work the contracted time. |

I am young, married, and have heard that question quite a lot. It usually creeps in something like;
"So. . .your husband, do you have children? No? Ok. Do you think you will have children? No? Hmmm, Do you want children? Oh, you don't? So you do think you will have a baby while you are in Korea?"
I just say that children are not in my plans anytime soon, if at all. I don't really expect to ever have children, so it's not a lie for me. Sometimes I'm not sure f they believe me. I'm marred; children are in the contract, right? The first time I was asked about children, I was a little bit shocked, but now I almost expect it.
It has never hindered me getting a contract offer from a hagwon. Just be prepared to answer it honestly and directly. Hope that helps! |

Yep. The reason why they might ask that here is to see if they'll have to give you maternity leave (I think a month paid, two additional months unpaid, IIRC). It would suck for your employer to have you not working for 25% of the contract. |
