| Yeah, it makes sense that it could swing either way. The uni I'm at now is soooo much better in terms of how we're treated by both students and faculty compared to the technical college I was at before, it's basically night and day. |

Our uni doesn't have this criteria.
Actually, we wouldn't hire anyone in their 20's...kind of an unwritten rule.
The window dressing thing is simply your opinion. I don't think it is true. |
Scott, interesting that you say that. I knew someone at your school a few years ago and I was told that the most qualified applicants were not hired. |

Interesting TECO.
Did this person have access to the applicants files so they could accurately judge their respective qualifications? What ever the overal profile the schools was looking for in terms of qualification, experience?
Which positions are you talking about here: Instructor, Lecturer, Guest Professor?
These types of statements need to be backed up or at least from a source that had access to concrete facts. I am not saying you have wrong information TECO, I am just not all that sure about the reliability of your source. |

In the last two years every person hired has been qualified. Qualified meaning they had a Masters in Ed, TESOL, or Linguistics...as well as previous uni experience.
A few years ago...well...was a few years ago. We get enough qualified candidates now that we don't have to hired anyone without a Masters. |

I would say there is a difference in the employment market in recent years (2009 on) and before the economic meltdown.
Since the economic crisis, it has defintively been an employers market out there.
Before that, certain universities sometimes had trouble finding qualified applicants and sometimes they had to go with someone that they would not have hired normally. |

Scott,
Not only were a few Ph.D holders overlooked, but a non-native English speaking teacher with no experience teaching in Korea was hired.
I'm not sure what's going on over there now at Inha, but I wasn't impressed with what I was told. |

Ph.D holders that want to teach conversational English to freshman in Korea are probably overlooked for very good reasons. |

Not in the last couple of years...no non-native speakers were hired so I am not sure what you are talking about.
I can only talk about when I have been involved in the hiring process. And, yes, we haven't hired some Ph.d's...because we didn't think they were the best person for the job. When hiring, most qualified, means to us...the best teachers...that doesn't always mean the person with the most paper behind them.
But every person we have hired in the last two years has been qualified...the most qualified...is probably a matter of contention...but not by those on the hiring committee... |
