All things considered what country is South Korea most comparable to?
I figure:
USA = Canada
Cuba = Venezuela
Laos = Vietnam
So what about South Korea? |

My first thought was Japan but then I considered Taiwan. |

+1
In terms of law enforcement, popular monoculture, economic growth, emergence of a vacation ethic, growth of youth culture, second generation urbanites, etc. |

I've also heard it compared to Italy, because they're both peninsulas, the people like to touch each other, and Seoul is an incomparable wonder of classical architecture and the former seat of a glorious empire that dominated world history. |

Watch American Graffiti and tell me how Korea even remotely resembles USA in 1960. |

I don't think Korean culture and lifestyle resembles that of any western country.
Recent dictatorial governments
Confucian history and mindset
Intensive competitive education system
Dense urban and suburban housing
Comparatively recent poverty
All these make Korea very different from western societies/cultures.
The closest to Korea must be Japan.
And before anyone brings up the old cliche that 'Koreans are the Irish of Asia'.......let me tell you, from an Irishman, Koreans are not much like us at all.
Only the history of war and division are similar.......but the people themselves are very different. |

Laos has way more in common with Thailand than with Vietnam. |

I used to live in Japan, and everyday life Korea doesn't remind me much of it. I'd say Taiwan or maybe even Shanghai. |

Anyone who says Japan doesn't know what they are talking about. Korea is NOTHING like Japan. If you want to compare, Korea is closer to China than any other country. But definitely NOT Japan. |
