You can catch a bus from Osaek to Seoul.

Just like anywhere else, put in a reservation if you reckon there'll be a lot of people in the area.

Really??? is Osaek even a big town?? I was worried there might not be too much there!

I actually live in Suwon and would travel to Sokcho from there.....but i could go back to Osaek. Any idea's how regular the buses are?

Also in Osaek, what is accommodation like? Can i get a pension or something for cheap? 30,000-40,000??

I did it last Choseok. It was a lot of fun, and I went to one of the temples. Skinned my knee pretty badly on the way down. Rule #1 of taking photos is stop walking!

I actually went last weekend with a group of 6. We stayed here in Osaek.. http://www.osaegnature.com/ it was 180,000 for 2 nights, so split between 6 people it was cheap.

We took the bus from Dong Seoul / Gangbyeon to Osaek. The same bus stops in Sokcho. You can also take the bus from Yatap to Sokcho I think.

Thats great info, thanks for the link!! I will be travelling alone so hopefully i can find somewhere cheap to stay.

I plan on hiking over the range from the Seorak side to Osaek and crashing in Osaek on sunday night.

Is that pension far from the Osaek ranger station or the Namseorak Information centre, as seen on this map:

I want to try get an early bus around 8am from Osaek to Seoul on monday morning, i'm sure this is possible right?

Judging by the map, I think that link is 5 minutes from Yaksuteo information centre, but thats very close to the Osaek Ranger station. In that area there are hot springs, shops etc. There are a few motels in the area too but I can't remember their names. Find a Korean to search them for you, that's what we did!

I'm sure getting a bus at that time will be fine, give or take an hour. The shop that sells the bus tickets looks like a normal shop, its at the end of the road that meets the main road, near the information centre.

Cobbles, you live in Suwon right? There is a small group of us going to Jirisan from Yongin in a few weeks (around 10th June) to hike there if you are interested.

Osaek is tiny & charming. The Greenyard Hotel has one of the best hotspring spas in Gangwondo. The little town square has a bunch of small shops with offbeat rural offerings. Across the stream theres a string of mountain veggie restaurants, all very good. Osaek also has its own set of local trails up a rocky river valley which rival Seoraksan day-courses, with mineral springs, a quaint temple, & wildlife. Few other hikers.

The Greenyard runs an occasional free shuttle into Sokcho. Theres an hourly local bus that will get you into Yangyang, then buses every 10 minutes from there to Sokcho. You can try flagging down an intercity bus on the highway. Even a taxi wouldnt be out of the question.

Its actually a great hike....

In the fall or spring it is the most pleasant as well.
