My contract is up soon, and I got a job lined up for the day after. Do I need a letter of release to avoid a visa run, or would it be okay, having the contract start the day after.

I ask because the admin people at my school are w**kers and they may not sign one. I'd like to avoid a visa run if possible. Does anyone (oh great Ttompatz) know what the deal is with this? I have all of my papers ready.

I also don't want to risk losing that severance and flight money.

You dont need an LOR to transfer at the end of a contract anymore if you have time remaining on your ARC. LOR's are only required now if you resign and try to transfer mid-contract.

Have you spoken to your current employer and told them how much you enjoyed your experience there and how much you have learned and grown?

Immigration is requiring me to have a letter of release to transfer my visa, even though my next job starts 2 weeks after my current contract ends. This might be because my current contract and ARC expire at the same time.

I just hope that my school will sign the release letter. They're not happy that I'm leaving them for another school, especially since they didn't get funding to replace me (but I guess city hall would've funded my renewal). To my school, the only acceptable excuse for me leaving is if I go back to the US permanently. My school already tried to screw me on one-way airfare to my home country because I wasn't going back permanently (I'm visiting home between contracts), and I had to have GEPIK step in.

I called immigration and they said that I'd have to get the LOR. I'm going to just suck it up and get one from my school. My coteacher will get it for me.

Typical kimmi info line responses - inconsistent and incorrect.......

From the kimmi webpage:

□ Documents to be Attached (첨부서류)
ㅇBasic Required Documents (공통서류)
A copy of employment contract (고용계약서), business registration (사업자 등록증), and a letter of consent on a transfer from the head of former employment place (원 근무처 장의 동의서)
※ Provided, that the letter of consent on a transfer will be exempted from submission on the condition that a foreigner continues working up to the expiry date of the contract term or the agreed date between the foreigner and his employer. Furthermore, in case there are inevitable causes such as temporary close or permanent shut-down of the employment place, or overdue wages, the letter of consent on a transfer can be substituted with a document or a letter proving such causes. Please note that, specially with an aim to protect good and sincere employers and to sustain the order of foreigners' stay in Korea, foreigners who are dismissed due to the reasons caused by themselves or resign before the date of termination of employment contract without the consent on a transfer from their former employers, shall not fall on the eligible category.
