If you add in a normal teaching schedule at FLI
7:00-8:30am
9:30 - 11:30am
12:00 - 1:00pm
1:30 - 5:30 KOREAN CLASS
7:00 - 9:00pm
it is a crazy hard schedule to actually put effort into your classes |
Is that really 6.5 hours of teaching a day?
If so, that works out to 32.5 hours per week.
You must be making big, big money working all those hours.
Or do they pay what public school teachers who go home at 3 p.m. get? |

Back in the day, it was THE place for professional teachers to work. I personally know at least 5 highly experienced teachers, all with uber credetials (MA/CELTA/DELTA, etc...), who USED TO work for FLI. There was a diaspora a few years back when the FLI changed it's contract terms. They all moved to SNU (which subsequently lost them when they, too, changed their contract terms for the worse), Ewha, Konkuk, and eventually even to Yonsei's departmental program.
Also, there was supposedly a dastardly new boss who rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. The 'boss factor' may have changed, but from what I understand, it is no longer a stellar place for highly qualified professionals to seek employment. |

The pay isn't very high. Once again, I stress that the chief appeal is the free language study.
Interesting that it used to be a sweet gig. The area where the institute is located actually looked quite pleasant. |

Wow, I seriously can't thank all of you enough for taking the time to explain all of this.
I guess my question right now is- Career wise, would it be a smart move to work here instead of an EPIK/hagwon position? Someday I want to work at a university so would working Yonsei FLI give me better chances in the future?
I don't mind working hard and it sounds that these guys are going to push me for it, but I want the best chances to get a university position in the future. |

Yes, it would be better than a public school and only better than a hagwon if you are not teaching adults. You have the paper qualifications and what universities will look for beyond that is relevant experience, something public schools and most hagwons cannot provide. |

Why did all these good places seem to push the limit? I don't get this about Korean universities. It's hardly like they need to save a few bob, but then they go and screw it all up for themselves, their employees, and their students. |

|
|
I'm signed to teach at the Yonsei GIFT English camp. It sounds great, but does anyone know if they only hire white teachers? I emailed my boss and said I hated working for schools that don't hire gyopo, black, etc., but assumed Yonsei wasn't like that. She hasn't directly answered me.
Any feedback, or ideas where to find this out?
Thanks |

That's noble of you, but the woman is probably like "what the heck was that all about?" right now.
And sorry, have no idea about the info you're seeking. |

It's mostly just the mindset that one foreigner is as good as another, so why pay more?
Are far as saving money, you know how administrators are--after a few years they start to think of it as their money and they don't want to spend any of it. |

Update: Was hired through an actual university. When I wrote to the director of Yonsei FLI, she never returned my mail. Up until then she was very "Oh, just call me by my first name and let's be chatty, etc etc" Does not bode well. I was also warned by a previous employee about internal drama/politics. Just thought someone might want this info someday! |

So you want to know why Yonsei doesn't hire - in your opinion - blacks or kyopos? What business is it of yours? If you don't want to work there, then don't. I wouldn't answer you either and sure as heck wouldn't hire you.
There's your requested feedback.
Where could you find this out? Did you check their website? I am sure they extrapolate on their racist hiring practices somewhere there. Email the dean; he certainly has a wealth of info for you.
Then again, you know Korea. Years behind the West, primitive, misogynist, racist backwater...
If you are uber-concerned about the state of human rights in Korea, I suggest fixing your own country first - doesn't matter where you are from; every country has problems - then move on to the rest of the world. |

Just wondering how everything went? did you take the job at Yonsei? and if so, any regrets?
Also, those who applied for the GIFT program, anything to share?
I've been considering them too lately... but looking at the regular schedule, if it's still the same, maybe it's not for me - 7am ??? that's a 6:30am start!!
It's a pity they seem to have wavering standards with who they actually hire. Although they do say they have a preference for individuals with Education related Bachelors and Master degrees.
hrmm.. you just never know. |
