What country and city would you recommend for taking the CELTA course? I thought perhaps Changmai, Thailand or Vietnam? What do you think is the best considering location and cost involved?
Thanks |

I did my CELTA with lots of sun and and in Phuket. Great staff and instructors, cheap food and accommodations. Do a search on Dave's and you'll find lots of info. |

Since you are taking your CELTA to teach adults back in Canada, make sure you check the requirements to get a TESOL Cert in each province. if you need that to teach.
I don't know what job you are applying for or what you need to get certify, but I do know that a lot of CELTA programs outside of Canada don't qualify for TESOL Cert in some provinces.
TESOL Ontario for example needs, I think, 30 hours of observation and 20 hours in the classroom. Most CELTA programs don't have this much. |

TESOL Ontario lists CELTA certification as acceptable for receiving a license
Oh wait!!
I can't seem to find that reference any longer. It seems now both a CELTA and DELTA is required. What the @#$%?
What is a DELTA? |

TESOL Ontario does accept CELTA's but they need to have the right amount of observation and practice teaching. I think some people who deliver the celta in Canada have modified their program to fit with TESOL Canada and TESOL Ontario's requirements.

I know that CERTESOL course form U of Sask specifically states that the TESOL Ont cert requires you to take additional hours....additional to what they have in their program which I think is 20 observed and 10 practice.
Again, I don't know for sure but make sure you double check before you sign up with a CELTA program that they have enough observed hours and practice hours. I haven't looked into it for awhile as I am still working on the CERTESOL program. |

Tuition for the CELTA should not be your only criterion. Most of the schools that offer it are fairly competitive with one another. You can take it in Seoul, but would you want to? I like Seoul well enough, but the chance to take a break from this place is one that I plan to take advantage of.
I've chosen to take the CELTA at ITI in Istanbul. I've thought about living in Turkey. It will be my chance to check it out. The school helped me find accommodations at a reasonable cost and it's location in the heart of Istanbul doesn't hurt a bit as far as I'm concerned. Some people would rather sun themselves on a beach, some want to visit Prague, Barcelona, or Budapest. I thought about taking the course somewhere in America but none were close to my home and I didn't want to take on the cost of living in a larger city while taking the course, plus they seem to charge more for the course in those locations.
In short, you have to decide what your purpose is and which location will suit that purpose. Make the most of it. |

Chiang Mai has plenty of cheap apartments that you can stay at while you are doing the course. I would definitely recommend Chiang Mai over Vietnam. Chiang Mai is very inexpensive to live and stay in and easy to get around. You can rent a motor bike for like $125 US a month (that's for a new really nice one). It's easy to get around Chiang Mai on a motorbike. I lived there for a long time and used a motorbike from time to time. Take my word for it, I know about this, you want to do it in Chiang Mai, convenience, cost, everything. |

I'm going to do mine in Krakov in August. It's cheap though probably not as cheap as it can be done for in Thailand, I need a fix of Europe after being here for so long. Also it's run by the British Council. |

Since it doesn't matter which site one takes the CELTA from a qualifications point of view, I decided to look at it from an edutourism perspective. Where did I want to go that I have never been and may never go to if not for the month-long course? The answer was New Zealand and so I did my CELTA in Auckland, spending a couple of weekends travelling around, went to some beaches, did some shopping, talked with the locals every day on my way to class and around afterwards. I also chose January because it was their summer. Everything was ideal except for the cost. I can't imagine it could be have been more expensive to take the CELTA anywhere else. The airfare was hefty, I spent a lot shopping and eating out and only tempered the cost by doing a homestay through the CELTA center director's friend. The costs were worth it because that month was filled with perfect memories. Love the Auckland!
A few years later I spent a month in Thailand and thought Phuket or Chiang Mai would have been nice too. No way would I have been happy in Bangkok breathing that foul air pollution for 30 days!! |

Aren't they all run by the British Council? I know mine was, and it was done in Bangkok. |

Many I've seen are International House, I'm not sure exactly what the deal is with them, some kind of franchise I guess. |
