"A police crackdown that ended early this month led to the arrest of 1,249 foreigners and 79 indictments. Most cases involved extortion and violence. And the foreign gangs are seeking to join hands with organized Korean crime. It is only a matter of time before they expand their reach into Korean society. The country needs to think twice about welcoming foreigners without proper screening. There has to be a system of background checks and records of visitors. Without it, Korea could be headed toward a dangerous future. "

- Yes, the apocalypse is near for Korea. $10 say this idiot writer is from the AES.

How many of those foreigners are ESL teachers I wonder... Then someone do the math ratio of total ESL teachers to arrested ESL teachers.

The article didn't mention English teachers at all. It's about Asian gangs. And some disjointed asides about Italians and Irish in New York. Basically unreadable, as always.

To be fair, that article is talking about foreigners/foreigner gangs from other Asian countries. It only uses the history of immigrant gang-related activity in the west as a very, very loose correlation to Korea. Stupid nonetheless though.

Which is basically the problem with using this blanket term "foreigners" all the time. Why not say "Chinese/Asian immigrants?"

A significant percentage of the Chinese are ethnically Korean as well.

Isn't it the official line from China that Koreans are ethnically Chinese?

US/Canada/NZ/Australia/Europeans/South Africans, altogether, make up a very small percentage of the foreign population.

However, the assumption is often made with anything revolving "foreigners" mean they are talking about them. Can we make it clear that MOST foreigners living in Korea are Chinese and Southeast Asian peoples?

When the newspapers write about Koreans marrying foreigners, they don't mean Mr. Kim marrying Miss Jackson.

Believe you me, the newspapers will make it a point to specifically say English Teachers when they want to bash you.

I don't know how anyone can get emotional or upset or a newspaper that also publishes articles like this...

This is not exactly high brow journalism...

I wonder if this is the perception of most Koreans when the term "foreigner" is used.

Ask them.

Ask the people around you - when you hear the term 'foreigner', what do you think of?
