Good to see that the Korean Government is at least trying to do something about it. I see that as a positive, though I hope it is not at the expense of free speach.
I think with the birth rate declining in Korea, these issues are going to become more and more important...and debated. |

| The fact that the government has to remove racist rants on the internet speaks volumes about this country. They either think Korean people are so stupid that they can be persuaded to be racist by some random comment online, or Korean people really do lack any ability to think for themselves. It's probably both. |

Or.. the korean government just has different policies on policing the internet. |

As I recall from past conversations on this website, Fermentation is in fact a Korean with the caveat that he spent some years in America.
Actually, I think both of you are right. There is not much emphasis being put on critical thinking in the public schools here and this lack of critical thinking combined with a tendency for people jump onto the bandwagon, could easily be a consideration with regards to censoring the Internet. On the other hand, such measures are not much different than how anti-hate speech gets punished in Europe (a place which is supposedly enlightened). |

RE: the following submitted link:
The International Marriage Damage & Prevention Center http://cafe.daum.net/mna5319?tnilcafemy=item
after reading the above Korean website more carefully, I think it needs to be said that this website (which maybe could be most accurately translated as 'international marriage fraud prevention') may have been misplaced in the context of this thread, and hence wrongly used to fan the flames of suspicion.
This thread is about racism on the rise in Korea.
The link on international marriage is, if the Koreans I checked with are to be believed, is actually more akin to an upholding of the integrity of authentic international marriages and wanting to protect the repute of those against those internationals who marry Koreans for fraudulent reasons and exploit the Koreans. The guy is complaining that the F license for spouses of foreigners should be extended before being converted to citizenship.
At least two of the testimonials we read together on that page are about people telling their story about how they were taken in by their international spouses.
In summary, I think that link doesn't belong in this thread and I think the poster who submitted it may have been under false impressions. Unless the translations I got and checked twice now were sugar-coating or otherwise dodging a less noble tone in the message.

| Welcome to the world, Korea. If you want to be a part of it, you are going to have to accept that other people do things differently and don't think the same as you do. Learn to accept being multicultural because you aren't going to have a choice in it. |

The problem with people like Captain Corea is that they automatically assume I just like to criticize Korea while ignoring problems elsewhere. They post examples of similar problems in the US like it makes Korea's problems okay. I criticize lack of critical thinking and censorship anywhere in the world. Some may consider oppression of free speech "different" but I think it's just as "different" as the KKK's views on race relations. Racism is racism and oppressing civil liberties is oppressing civil liberties. I despise racism (because I think it just doesn't make sense to be racist) but forcing people into "progressiveness" is just retarded. Following the footsteps of Europe isn't always a good idea in my opinion.
That's another problem with Korea: the authorities tend to copy whatever the "advanced" nations are doing without really thinking it through. |

| Korea going down the path of 'multiculturalism' is a big mistake for nations like Korea and Japan. That's what makes them unique, 99% one ethnic group. |

To me multiculturalism is simply the natural consequence of modern global transport and communication networks. Human populations are no longer isolated by geography or language. The hermit kingdom is unsustainable.
Multiculturalism is still in its early stages however, and many countries are managing to impose their monoculture in the short term at least. Islamic and certain third world cdictatorships spring to mind.

How so?
As I see it, succesful nations like the US or UK were built on a tradition of welcoming immigrants and mixing in different influences. A strong rope is made from many strands. |

Slowly.
History has shown us that too fast a change has created conflict, even looking at an issue with hindsight we that that in the short term violence occurred.
Therefore, we need a slow transition not a fast one, a fast one is no more generous than an invansion and they always end badly.
I support the Koreans on this issue as I am seeing the negatives in my own country and it doesn't look good.
You might think its all great, but without some plan, its problematic. |
