Hello,

I have two years' full-time classroom experience teaching Science and English to non-native speakers. I also have a 100-hr TEFL certificate. One recruiter told me that working in one of the southern provinces in a rural community would get me 2.2m because 'the teaching experience has to be experience in Korea.' Another told me it would be 2.5m because 'any full-time teaching experience with the TEFL certificate qualifies you for the Level 1 paygrade.'

Any speculations/certain knowledge of which one of these is correct?

I am a private hire beyond the realms of EPIK in a public school, with a masters degree and two years experience. I make 2.3/month. Working in a hagwon may net you a higher pay, but it depends on where you work. Good luck.

So what? You start in Korea at the first rung of the ladder, like everyone else. No taking cuts. Enjoy your 2.1 salary, rookie.

Does your TEFL have an in-class component? Jeollanamdo, one of those southern, rural provinces, won't accept a TEFL for a pay bump unless it has an in-class component. You might double check for a specific province.
In this province, your teaching experience does not have to be in Korea to bump you up the pay grade, but it likely varies by program/location. Your option #2 sounds more accurate for this area.

To get credit for your classroom teaching experience, you need a signed document on school letter head stating that you worked as a full time employee from such and such date to such and such date, and what classes and subjects you taught. It must say full-time to get credit. (This was for me when I signed for GEPIK, although it might have changed.)

You can ditch that first recruiter. Your experience counts. You just get the written documentation from the school(s) like jrwhite82 says.

Doesn't even have to be from your home country. I got documentation from my school in Taiwan (hagwon) and my high school in Japan.

It should just say something like:

To the Principal (if you're applying for public school in Korea),

So and so was employed at [name of school] in [country] as a full time English teacher for twenty-four months from [month/year] to [month/year]. I would recommend him/her to teach in South Korea.

Sincerely,

[name of principal from the school you worked at]

Yeah, must say full time.

Don't listen to these wing-nuts telling you your experience doesn't count. That said, however, I do think that anything more than two years experience outside of Korea doesn't help based on the parameters of the pay scale.

As for the TEFL cert, has to be 120 hours for any pay bump. [edit: actually, looking at the guidelines I was given, 100 hours is enough. Unless things have changed.]

So, for GEPIK, you should be level 1 (2.3 mil won). EPIK, also at least 2.3 mil. SMOE, 2.3 mil.

By the way, are you a state-certified teacher? If so, you should try applying for international schools.

And by the way, working in a rural area gives you an extra 100,000 won/month. So that's 2.4 mil you'd start out at, if you're so inclined to be out in the sticks.
