The starvation mode thing is mostly a myth.

It's not all myth. I spent a few of my teenage years severely restricting my caloric intake (600 calories a day or fewer) and consequently wrecked my metabolism for good. Putting your body into starvation mode for extended periods of time can permanently damage your thyroid and/or alter the messages your brain (your hypothalamus specifically) sends to it.

Granted, the occasional crash diet will have little deleterious impact, if any; yet it's naive to think that long term, extreme diets have none.

Well the OP did say she was planning on doing it for only a short time. I'm sure if she got to the point where her body was obviously cutting out "unnecessary" functions (as evidenced by hair loss, period loss, etc) she would definitely stop before causing irreversible damage. Obviously, suffering from an eating disorder for a number of years can cause severe long-term negative effects. But as with anything, it depends on the person. I do think it is worse for younger folks (HS aged or even younger) because their bodies are still developing.

I agree that maintaining a very low caloric intake shouldn't pose any real problem if done just over the short term... I just want to make sure people are aware that there are potential complications if done over longer periods of time. Many of the warning signs that your body is starving can go overlooked because most develop gradually rather than suddenly (the loss of one's menstrual cycle is a notable exception). It's time to increase your caloric intake if you notice either (a) you feel much colder (or fainter, or dizzier) than before or (b) your nails, bones, and/or hair are more brittle. If you experience none of these symptoms, you're probably fine and have nothing to fear.

Down 5kg since the first week of March, and over the last 2 weeks, I cheated and got Mickey D's once, and finished off a couple of 2 litre bottles of Coke, and made and almost finished off 1/2 tray of homemade baclava.

Still not exercising, and the kilos are falling off very slowly. But they are falling.

I'm not losing weight well anymore. I know how to do it, but it's too slow. Might as well be fat. Smile

Plateau! Don't give in beautiful Kaypea, take care of yourself!

I ate an entire roll of chocolate digestives on Sunday along with strawberry milk, a bunch of vodka, half a pepperoni pizza, and boneless chicken wings. I think it must have came in for the day at over 3000 calories (calculated on fitday)!
I added up my entire week and subtracted it from my bmr and I only have a reduction of 1500 calories for the whole week. qq. I think I need to join some sort of program for binge-eating. :/

Thanks... it's WEIRD. I *know* if I lay off the damn food I'll lose weight, but then it's slow, and here I am in the PC Bang eating nachos. (This is the only place I do my MA work. I'm too embarrassed to watch my crappy TV shows in public).

A reduction of 1500 for the week is still pretty good. I mean, you'll never gain weight if you keep that up.

Yes, I've logged binges into Fitday too. It's a good idea, keeps you sort of aware. Once I logged a whole pizza on there... geez.

Good news everyone! (Please read that in Prof. Farmworth's voice)

I am stable this week. No binging, no overeating. It's lovely. I did have about 1600 calories yesterday as a result of drinking 465 cals, but I am okay with that (It was 4 units of alcohol in 3 drinks). It was social drinking. People have actively sought my company. Shocked Surreal. Plus I danced like a crazy person for an hour straight so hopefully that burned a little bit of it. (Serious: my abs are a little sore. Nice!)

I do have one "problem": All my clothes are too big for me!! (US size 4) My husband told me to wear a belt, and it is also too big for me. I am wondering if I should buy new clothes now in my current size (US 2 maybe?), or buy in my goal size (US 0) and just keep wearing the big stuff until the small stuff fits. But then, what if it never fits? Egah!

Why don't you go shopping and try some clothes on? That's always fun after losing a pound or two. Very Happy

Then.. buy a couple of things in your current size. Don't buy the aspirational size yet. Or buy stuff that works in multiple sizes, like tunic dresses with belts and leggings.

As many of us have experienced after coming to Korea, it might be useful to learn how make new holes in your belt. While I used to do it with a drill back home, I learned a much more convenient way here. Heat up the end of a chopstick over your stove and it will burn its way through the belt*.

*Results may vary. No guarantee on final product. May cause blisters and/or burn marks if not handled correctly. May cancel current warranties on the product.

I am feeling guilty because I just bought and ate this personal sized frozen hawaiian pizza from emart. it's an australian brand- pronto. i'm a bit confused about the packaging. from what I can tell from the korean calorie count, it says 395. but then the australian one under "energy" one column says 812kj and the other says 1660kj. What is kj and please dont tell me that i just at 1660 calories, because it sure didn't feel like it!

Tomorrow I begin a diet and 100-day weightlifting routine. Go me. Hopefully I can post the before and after pics to show all you suckers what real motivation looks like.

1cal = 5kj

So the pizza was about 1660/5 = 350calories

Actually I think 1 calorie = 4.2 Kilojoules

4.184 kilojoules = 4,184 joules = 1 Calorie = 1 kilocalorie = 1,000 calories

So yes 1660 KJ = 395 Calories.

I finally weighed myself today. I broke through my first goal weight and am officially 47.42 kg (104.5 lbs). My waist is whittled to 64cm (25in). I would like to focus on tightening my stomach muscles and achieving a nice 24" waist.

I am a bit weirded out by my body changes. I don't think I've ever been this small. I was a chubby kid and even when I went on an epic (and unsafe) diet at the age of 12, my lowest weight after my growth spurt was 107. Also I grew an additional 2 inches since then.
Anyway, my belly button looks weird. The skin is all stretching over is and I can't stick my finger inside anymore. It's like puberty. Mysterious things are afoot.

I hear you DP. My body is that of a stranger at this point. Its healthier for sure, but the constant focus on watching what i eat is a downer. Sometime soon i will get a bagel. Maybe two. and eat them.

Yeah, I LOVE food. I do have "cheat" days. But I am trying to limit my calorie intake on those days to 1500 which is a little higher than my bmr. Plus I get in a little extra exercise. I figure I might as well use that energy I am taking in.
This morning I hate a sausage egg mcmuffin, hash brown, and cafe latte from McDonald's after I went to the sauna. I just finished up a 90 minute powerwalk along the shore. It only undid half the damage, but still worth it, IMO.

Plus I am taking these pills called Cheater's Relief with my epic cheat meal I tend to have on Friday nights. I don't know if they work, but I don't have the carb bloat the next day, so that's something.
