|
|
McDonald's chief executive Jim Skinner has stood by the fast-food chain's trademark clown Ronald McDonald.
On Wednesday, a group of 550 healthcare workers wrote to McDonald's asking it to stop marketing to children using methods such as toys and the clown.
"Ronald McDonald is going nowhere," Mr Skinner told Thursday's shareholders' meeting.
Shareholders rejected a proposal for the company to issue a report outlining its role in childhood obesity.

I always thought he looked really creepy too but I think they're removing him for the wrong reasons. They're making him seem like some drug pusher. There's nothing wrong with kids eating at McDonalds every once in awhile and they should be free to advertise how they want.
Now that they've done everything but ban smoking these people would be out of a job if they didn't have something to target so they're raising hysteria about fast food and trying to ban everything. Are you going to have to present ID to buy a pack of donuts in the future? |

I am all for making happy meals healthier and/or reducing commercials from the chain on kids cartoons, but the chain is free to have the clown. However, they should not market very bad food to the kids. |

| It would be more realistic if Ronald had blotchy skin and weighed 350 pounds. |

Just recolor the Grimace with a flesh-tone and you've more or less got exactly what you describe. |

My high school friend used to work at Mickey D's as a fry cook. After a couple weeks his face literally looked like a pizza.

| It's hardly the marketing-to-the-kids' fault when in the end it's the parents' decision to let their children eat it. |

Well, he was in high school.
I'm going to step up for McDonald's. Its not the best food. Its not the healthiest food. Its not even the tastiest food. But tell me you haven't wandered into one while new in another country and known that you'd finally get a recognizable experience. And thereafter regretted it.
You know what, I'm going to sit down now. |

This is true.

Absolutely. I still very occasionally in a moment of weakness stop in to get an order of fries, and then of course later wish I hadn't.
It's the smell they pump out of their buildings, I swear. If you're not careful the next thing you know you're standing in line. |

yet again we're giving parents free reign to blame everyone and everything else but themselves for their kid's issues.
don't want your kid to be fat? don't eat maccas. kid pressuring you to eat at maccas because he wants a toy? slap him in the face and force-feed him celery.
you'll thank me in ten years. |

The food is only 'very bad' if it's accompanied by a sedentary lifestyle, and, as far as I'm aware, Mickey D's hasn't been marketing that. |

Who said anything about him looking like a pervert? Maybe we have a different definition of creepy-looking. |

I think some people are being more than a little disingenious here. You all know that your folks had about 0 control over what you ate when you were more than about 10 feet from them.
Parents are only asking for a little help in getting their kid to eat a healthy diet. Is that so awful? You may object to MTV turning your 11 year old daughter into looking like a sex pot, too, but hey, it's just business. It's 'our' responsibility to make money; it's your responsibility to control your kid.
The problem is that McDonald's is not in business to help your kid eat a healthy diet. It's in business to make money, and manipulation is part of the marketing strategy. The fact that people keel over at 32 from eating too many Big Macs is not their problem. (The magic hand of the market will take care of that in a few thousand years.)
And Kuros is right, the most pathetic New Year's Eve I ever spent in my life was eating a Cajun Chicken Sandwich at Popeyes in Tainan, Taiwan, all alone, in the rain. Thank god for small favors. |
