Hello all,
I am currently in the process of making a huge wall game for my students. Basically the students will win a sticker every time they get 100% on a daily spelling test. Considering I have about 80 students ranging from Let's Go Starter to kids who have lived abroad, I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find a list of vocabulary words based on different levels (ie. Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced)?
Our hogwan currently gives the students sticker boards and the kids are nuts about collecting them. No really, they freak out about them. Personally I don't get it. After they collect 100 stickers all they get is a notebook. They come into class as proud as a peacock when they get one. I am interested to find out what other teachers do to motivate the students to do their homework.
How much would you be willing to pay for a game to keep your students motivated?
I look forward to hearing from you. |

Well actually the op's question interested me so exactly I started hunting around on the net & there dont appear to be any clearly laid out graded word lists. In fact theres a lot of dispute in the field. A search on the Dolch word list brings up the first 220 words a beginning reader needs to identify, but thats getting outdated now. Beyond that its a crapshoot. A resource that tidily sets out increments of frequently used words would be a goldmine to esl teachers & kidlit writers but doesnt seem to exist. Kindly prove me wrong!
Best bet might be a survey of textbook indexes. |

When I need to find vocabulary words for my students, it is the listing at the back of the textbooks that I go to. Usually I start with the textbooks they have finished as they should be able to spell those words.
If you have access to them, Let's Go, New Parade, Discovery, Explorer, and Odyssey all have lists and you know from the level of the book which level of student they are aimed at. |
